I am getting a little wind ,say 15mph steady and gusting to 20-25 plus without a doubt ,along with a pelting rain. The education is this: I walked out on my patio to do a visual on what was happening with the martin house and its lone pair. She was on the nest I assume a little dark to really tell yet but he was sitting on top of the house as if he liked all that wind and rain just non chalantly looking around and talking a bit

Hi Dick,

Remember, martins use housing ONLY for the purpose of raising a family. That means they live "outside" 8-9 months of the year.

The martins in my colony seek shelter during severe storms. If the colony is away hunting as a group (as they often are early in the season) the birds will return home minutes before a severe storm hits and dive into their gourds.

However, if the storm is not severe much of my colony will perch on their housing and actually appear to enjoy the rain. In a heavy rain they perch with their beaks pointed up; I assume this is to prevent rain from flowing into their nose.
