Landlord Site pictures?

I have a suggestion/question.

I am still pretty new to this hobby and titled a "wannabe" landlord. It is both fun and educational for me to see pictures of other successful landlords setups. Could a "sticky" topic be placed on the forum where others could view pictures/setup of these seasoned landlords?

I know that you can read some of this in user profiles for the individual, or do a search however it would be nice to have a central place to view all of these.

Is this a reasonable suggestion/question?

Thanks!

Fordude & Dick,
We all try and help one another here on this site That is what it is all about , "People Helping People" ,so posting your pic's here on the forum helps us help you , please don't feel threatened we all had to get a start as a Martin Landlord sometime, I just wish way back in the 70's someone would have talked with me as i was starting, it sure would have saved me from alot of Mistakes and Heartaches later on in my Life as a Landlord. We just want to help Martin People because we care , that is why we say the things that we say and who know's maybe one day there will be a specific place just for all the pictures..

I'm not seasoned by any stretch, this is year 2 for me but this is my setup. The gourd racks are set up for 16 on each pole but I only have 8 this year. I'll fill them next year. I took a lesson from someone here and added some extended cane perches to the gourd racks. They seem to like them.

Your site has grown, Ian! Didn't you start with just an inherited house last season? How many pairs do you have now?

This forum has been in existence since 1998 and it once had a place for landlord's colony photos. In Nov 2003, the forum was migrated to new software and apparently that photo section was not retained.

Click on my signature below to see my colony site. My site profile is hosted on the Michigan Martin website. So anyone could set up a webpage with his/her site description/photo on another website and paste the URL into their signature as I have done.

Thanks for sharing the information!

The photos are great!

Mary, you have a very nice looking website! You have spent a great deal of time with the design and layout, I really like what you have done.

As far as setting up a centralized location for landlord photos, thanks for the update.

I hope my request did not offend the webmasters of this site. I think the PMCA has done a fine job here and I know that a lot of work has been done on this website as well!

Not to mention the countless time needed to maintain the forum!

Thanks for this site!

Thanks, but I can't take credit for the layout. I just provided the text, data, and photos. Everything else was assembled by Mark Dietrich who is member MarkD-Mich on this forum.

Mark developed and runs the Michigan Martin website http://michiganmartins.com/

Take a look at the Michigan Map page. You can click any dot on the map and it displays the landlord's site info: http://michiganmartins.com/index.php?request=map.index

Well, here is pole 1 and pole 2, didn't think you'd make them out using my camera and getting both in one image. They're about 24 feet apart, for swooping fun. I'd move pole 2 closer but now its sorta claimed and they might not like that next year.

Mary,

This is exactly what I would like to do for Minnesota!

Mitch did a very nice job.

Well, you should contact Mark then. Again, his user name on this forum is MarkD-Mich.

Mark is also a wannabe; he lives within the large "dead" zone in the center of Michigan where there are no known colonies. However, he is now remotely managing a very critical site in Fowlerville, MI on the edge of the "dead" zone about 30-40 miles from his home.

Sigundo thats some wild looking gourds on pole 2

Heres a couple pics of my set up at my new place. It's the 1st year here so we'll see how many end up here.

And a pic of the old site which only has 2 poles left this year. Oh hey, you see the white short pvc pipe pole left of the S&K...I put a gourd on it last year and it fledged martins...bout 4 1/2 feet off the ground.

Mary it looks like your ready for a 2nd Bed-N-Breakfast

Bob, your site looks great.

Did you make the perching pole setup yourself?

I made a bed & breakfast with a perching pole on top but it's only about 5' off of the ground. I want to build/buy a telesoping pole to get it up higher.

Here's a picture of my B&B and then the perch that I have attached to my house about 50' up.

They really liked this perch last year!

Should have uploaded this too, here is my current setup. I also have a Perky pet 6 compartment house in the front yard.

I have 2 whistle gourds coming today that I am going to put under the T-14.

You gotta talk to Dave from S&K about that. They call those the double gourds. Looks like to me they fused a Bo and a Big Bo together into one. The martins took to them in about an hour after I put them up, and unlike my expanded house rooms, they actually DO build in the back, way out of reach of most stuff unless it can get into the gourd too.

They dont really fit onto the poles of the double rack (well, not enough to keep from banging together if you put 12 on a pole, which is why I've roped them). I have plans for next year (if I put them up again, but I think by next season I'll be able to get a sparrow trap up, I can't shoot anymore  ). Lots of people say swinging gourds deter sparrows, but I've not seen it, so I'm not worried about the fact that they don't swing.

Sigundo,

They might to most sparrows, I know they like the houses better. But they will choose a swinging gourd...I've seen it. If I couldn't shoot them, I'd hafta put up a house like Mary Dawnsong did that is exclusely devoted to traps.

Love your yard and set up. That lil circular copper thing on the left, can u hook a water hose to that? It looks like one my mom gave me a couple years back.

Fordude, yeah I made the perching poles...3 of them. Only have one here at the new house. 2 were from original telescoping poles you buy at like Menards or Lowes. They weren't heavy duty enough for housing...least to me. I then added a piece of 8 foot conduit to them, wrapped duct tape around it at the bottom where it goes into the telescoping pole(2 places about a foot apart). That was just to make it a snug fit because the conduit was smaller. Then put a hose clamp on it so it wouldn't work itself down inside the telescoping pole. Added some wood dowels and raised it up 8)

The Bed-N-Breakfast is only 7 feet maybe off the ground. It looks lower from my house because theres a hill that drops right at the housing down to a creek. They don't mind. Gotta run get daughter from school.

Yes, I inherited the setup below last spring. Note the tree about 3' from touching the gourds. The S&K house was further down below to the left of the brush pile. I relocated it to the new site after the season ended. The white house in the foreground with the gourds is rotten and was a den of S&S. I closed it up, repainted it and left it up this season so that the returning PMs would have something familiar to see. I had a bit of bad luck last season and the line that the gourds are hanging on broke and I lost about 3 nestfuls of eggs. I replaced the line and hung new gourds with SREH entrances this year, again, to provide something familiar for the returning PMs. This old site will cease to exist after this season. I will move the gourds to the new racks and remove the poles. I am also replacing the S&K house with a 12 or 16 compartment Northstar if I can get one built between now and then. I bought the plans from Bob a few weeks ago. I have Dave's 4 piece pole and am not satisfied with it's sturdiness. It rocks in the wind too much for my tastes, and I don't extend the top section for that reason. I'll probably relocate the pole off to the side a bit and use it for an eggshell/pine needle platform. Oh, and all this housing is for 6 pair, all nesting in the new site. The old site gets perched on occasionally and that is all. --Ian

I was going to buy 4 WG's to put under my T-14, I'm sure glad I didn't, they would not have fit!

They sure are HUGE!
