Starlings and House Sparrows disposal

Ok, I haven't checked all of the archives on this forum yet but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I may have found a new way to dispose of captured starlings and hosp.

A friend of mine found out that I was trapping starlings and house sparrows and mentioned it in conversation one night at a party. As it turns out one of the attendees at the party was a falconer. The falconer quickly asked what I was doing to dispose of the birds and requested my contact info.

After talking to me he informed me that he feeds his falcons starlings (frozen) and actually has to pay for them at the local raptor center! He asked if he could provide me with a live cage to place all of my captured birds in and he would stop by twice a week to pick up the birds! All I have to do is trap them - he takes care of the disposal.

For those of you out there that may not have the "stomach" to dispose of the birds, you may want to consider this as a viable option. You could call your local falconer's club and ask if anyone would be interested in your birds. Or if you have a raptor center, you might even want to check with them.

Do I get a star on my forehead now or what?

Excellent advice IMO. Even people who have house snakes and the like use sparrows and starlings. Talk to universities and colleges, their science department could probably use them and gladly take them.

I thought you already had a star on your forehead? :p Or is that a halo?

Fordude. This has been suggested a time or two, but normally deep in another thread. Perhaps you could give more information as to how to find falconers clubs. Yellow pages? Word of mouth? Newspapers? I've trapped EHS and EUST for years, and never been approached, nor have I ever seen falcons around, nor heard of any being in the area. Please help us out if you are able. Thanks, cause I'm sure there are going to be eyes on this thread. CUL Lou

I made a mistake yesterday, a very bad mistake. My son had built me a V-Trap and I have had it out for approx 2 weeks, but haven't caught anything, even with popcorn, white bread, eggshells, and other food scraps in it. I was thinking it needed decoys similar to any other bait repeating trap.

So yesterday when I got up, I had two starlings in my nest box repeating trap. Instead of disposing of them the regular way, I decided to put them in the V-Trap as decoys. It was seeming to work as a couple of hours later, I noticed other starlings hanging around the trap and trying to figure out how to get in.

Then after approx 3 hours, one of the starlings escaped out of the 3 inch gap. Then a few hours later the other escaped. I was sick. It actually made me ill.

It's one thing about the V-trap not working properly (probably constructed with flaws as my son did it from pictures and advice on the forum), but quite another for me to allow a pair of mated starlings to escape with no harm done to them at all.

I'll try to make up for it and also decide what to do with this large V-mistake.

Hi Fordude,
I had already looked in to that. Apparently the Falconer in our area won't accept sparrows because he doesn't know what they have been into (pesticides etc.) or if they are diseased. Ir is a good idea however. I am glad that yours will take your S&S. The name was given to me by our local Bird Rehabber and Game Warden. I should probably check if there are any others.

As far as contacting your local falconers club, I was told it's best to contact your local Department of Natural Resources and they could direct you to a contact.

There is also a link on one of the falconer's websites:

CUL Lou, being a falconer myself (actually, retired for now) I can help anyone out and hook them up with a falconer eager to get their hands on HS and ES. Just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Blake,
I live in Woodbridge Va., about 20 miles south of D.C. in Prince William County. If you know of anyone that would appreciate my sparrows, PLEASE, hook me up!
Thanks!

I just found out from one of the park rangers by my house that he traps the house sparrows and then snips their flight feathers. He then releases them by the houses he has setup that have American Kestrels.

My only concern would be that the flight feathers could grow back if they find a good hiding place.
