This year it seems the subbies are showing up much later than normal. I didn't get my first confirmed SY male until yesterday - 04/21/06 (he's still hanging around today). Other than that one, I haven't seen any others. Do we still have a week or two window for the SYs to show up? What's the time frame here?
Update: One of my favorite pairs just up and disappeared day before yesterday. One second they were busy building a nest and then nothing. I don't know what happened. I don't have any tell tale signs of an attack. Still, I do live near a greenbelt full of hawks. I'm just kinda sad today that I lost a pair. I hope they just found a place they liked better, but I doubt that's what happened.
The good news is a have 5 complete nests and 9 eggs so far in 3 nests. Yea! Also, I'm still working on reading the band on my ASY male. 3 weeks at it now. The band is pretty worn in spots. This is what I have confirmed: 8011 75--7. It's driving me nuts I tell ya!
Thanks bunches,
Shelley

Shel,
We should start seeing more subbies and they will continue arriving thru the end of May so 5 or 6 more weeks of possible tenants. I've only seen 2 or 3 the last couple of days.
Sorry you lost your pair...I can feel your pain! I've been so lucky this year to have almost non-existant problems from hawks, HOSP, and starlings.
I checked nests on Thur and had just 2 nests with eggs but expect to find many more started when I do nest checks on Sunday.
Reading those bands if oftentimes very tough. Dirt and crud will fill in around the numbers making them hard to read. I wish they would change the bands making a raised color #. Good luck,
Dale

Thanks, Dale. I couldn't remember the time frame on subs arriving from last year. I'm glad to hear it's a bigger window than I thought. With the late start this year, I was thinking there wasn't much time left to pick up more mated pairs. Still, I'm already doing better than last year, so I'm happy with what I've got.
That band is driving me nuts. I refuse to give up though. I invested in a scope, so now I'm going to get that number or die trying.
The good news is his nest has 2 eggs in it as of today, so he isn't going anywhere for a while (not by choice anyway).
I'm glad your place is doing so well. Let us know how many nests/eggs you've got going tomorrow, okay?

Hey Shel,
we are sorry for your loss, like dale said we all feel your pain. I was answering Barb's poston the forum the other day and actually bragging that i haven't had anymore Hawk attacks in a while, I no more than got off the computer from posting when a Large Hawk (looked like a Coopers) it had feathers all the way down his/Her leg was after one of my ASY Males but i had posted after the attack that all is well, he got the Decoy instead, yet another saved Martin by way of decoy and the next day i had 3 more fly by attacks....My Heart Rate was up needless to say but all ended well no martins were taken in these attacks...anyway , i have a couple of banded ASY Males here at my site, I posted a couple pic's of one of them but i can't begin to read the band's , dale has offered to let me use his scope, i may take him up on it as i am curious as to what Colony these PM's came from....Chin up.....Martin On!!!!!!!!

Doesn't it just drive you nuts, KC? You've got such a clear shot of the band there, but you can't read it!!! Ugh!
I've been out again this morning trying to read the number. The scope works great even though it's a cheaper one than most. I've just now got a few subbies bugging the crud out of the ASY males and it seems like every time my banded PM lands he is off again either chasing a SY male or being chased by one. I wish the boys would settle their booties down for a minute. Oh well, just yesterday I was worried about not getting any more SYs.
You're more than welcome to borrow my scope too once I get this stinkin' band read. I guess if you come all this way to get mine, then you might as well get Dale's though (or vice versa).
Good luck getting those bands read!
