My fellow guests (martins)continue to be busy nest bldg. in the mornings and feeding in the afternoons. There are several sy birds that have arrived recently. They don't spend the night, but return every morning.Well back to my topic. For the first time I have had the pleasure to host bluebirds.I have watched them with alot of interest ,and have learned alot about how they go about their lives.Yesterday, Mr. Blue shocked me when
a sparrow hawk landed on top of a cottonwood tree about about 150ft from my yard.Mr. Blue bolted to the tree were the sparrow hawk sat and
perched not two feet ,beak to beak with the hawk.I couldn't believe how close he was to the sparrow hawk.Mr Blue was making odd sounds and actually turning his back to the hawk.He did this several times. After about two mins. the hawk flew off with Mr. Blue right behind it.Sparrow hawks are quite common here and this is the first time the bluebird has acted in this way.I have to believe the babies are about to fledge.I feel very fortunate to have had the bluebirds nest in my yard it has been a blast...

Hate to say it... keep him there. I'm fortunate enough not to have anything tall enough where they can perch. I'd still be intrested in a fledging or two. With the S/S thinned out here, there are a few natives around, but not many place to hide.
