I changed out my aluminum hexagon shaped PM house for a cedar house. Has any body been successful with one of these. I have had PM perch nearby and look at it but have not seen any light on it or try to enter it it. I have had a successful PM colony for four years in this exact place.
Is it too late to replace the wooden with a one similar to what I took down?

No, its not too late to replace it with the one you took down, but why would you want to do that? The house is not the problem as they will go into any house that you put up if you had martins previously. I had a cedar house and the martins used it, but I took it down because the sparrows & starlings liked it more than the martins did. I have gourds now completely and the martins at my place like gourds better.
If you had a successful colony for 4 years, then you should have some back by now...I think your problem is this: a predator got into your house last year, maybe a snake, or an owl, starlings, or sparrows. The martins will not return if predators robbed your house last year and they got all the martins. You very definitely should have some back by now, but maybe you will get some new martins.
Another reason for them not coming back is that your trees grew big, and tree encroachment is preventing the martins from coming...

You definitely have had some problem with predators or trees, because you live in a place where there are many martins, so you might try to figure out why..
