My gourd set-up includes 3 Natureline gourds, two have round openings and one is a crecent. Of course the round openings were taken right away but I don't think the crecent has been although, a lot of PM hang on it. It does not have a "porch. Do they eventually learn how to get in or do I need to change the opening or add a porch?

I'm told they eventually figure it out but my supergourd crescents, the only 4 gourds I have, still sit empty. I've ordered clip-on porches from PMCA and will install them when they arrive to try to entice them to at least consider the gourds. I have way too many starlings here to offer a round holed anything. Good luck!

I have 4 of the naturelines, and they DO learn to get into them... actually, they seemed to learn how to hang and "roll" into them easier than they did on my house (which now has porches on it).
I will probably get porches for them in time also, but for now leaving them as is... got some Bo's and Double gourds coming in... SOMEDAY.... hehe its only been a couple days but I can't stand the wait... and they'll have porches on them so I'll see if it makes a big difference... guess when I"m done the martins will wonder why my gourds don't match.

I offer 48 Natureline gourds with crescent entrances without porches, and there is no problem. I was concerned seeing them hang from them by there feet, but it is something they seem to like doing. It seems like some sort of display- hanging by the feet from the opening and making a racket.
In the colony in my backyard, there is no other choice except the crescent gourds, and they have been 100% effective against starlings.
In my first year, I started with 12 with the round opening. I had to switch to crescent to avoid starlings. All the martins seemed to stay, and most likely they were fledged the previous year from round openings because that is all there is in my neighborhood. In fact, I've never seen any other opening except round in all the houses I have seen in the area.

I actually saw a PM get in the NL crecent gourd today. So I guess they do figure it out!!
