Bird Question

This is not about pms because I haven't seen any anywhere yet! However, I promised my sister I would pose this question to the forum.

She bought a new bird feeder for her backyard birds because her old one was wearing out. She filled the feeder and hung it up. The birds REFUSED to feed from it. They sat on the garage, the fence and in the trees patiently waiting. Fortunately, she had not thrown the old feeder away. She filled the old feeder, hung it up and the birds started feeding again.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks,

Lanell

It takes the birds a few days, maybe between 1 week to 2 weeks to accept the new feeder...How long did she leave it up for them before she replaced the new feeder with the old feeder?

I replaced an old wooden seed feeder with a new one from Walmart that had shiny metal silhouettes of birds on it. I had that thing up for a month and I could never get a bird to eat out of it.

Maybe a little off subject, but I have a bird feeder in my yard and put song bird seeds in it (black sunflower seeds). I have alot of red wing black birds there. It is only about 20 - 30 feet from my PM house. Will this effect the PMs? So far I would say NO. But I want to ask the experts.

No, not at all. Red Wings are abundant here also and have never bothered my PM's a bit.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Hi Lanell

Tell your sister, the birds don't like the way she rearranged the furniture.

All animals are like that... we made some new gourd racks this year and our Purple Martins have selected the gourds hanging on the two existing racks from last year. They are just funny like that.

I know as more birds come in, the new racks will fill up - but, first choice was the old racks.

BTW - I tell my birds to go see Lanell every morning. But, I'm afraid you will probably have to wait for some subbies again this year. Maybe those subbies that hung around your place last season will be back (and in black) this year. Don't get discouraged - the younger birds (yes, even the younger ASYs) will be along later.

Good luck to you Lanell.
Sincerely,

Thanks Laverne  Yeah, I have to wait for those whacko subbies. We had the cutest subbie up at the lake last year. He had such a personality, that if he comes back all purple, I'll know it's him!!!!!
He didn/t stay because he could never woo a mate, but he was fun to watch. Vocal little thing.
