Martin Colony History: Established colony in 1990

All our Martins are gone. We had a very successful year. 85 fledged, no casualties at all, which is unusual for us as every year we always find a dead adult and/or babies. Last year we found Martins had built a nest over a dead starling! They must have worked fast as we had just checked the nests 5 days before. It's always disheartening when something happens to one of them, but we must look at the bright side that most of them survived. A neighbor further down the road has Martins also and we see theirs fly over once or twice every evening, but we miss all the chatter in the back yard! We want to thank everyone for the support you gave us at the beginning of the year, changing from round holes to crescent holes and how we didn't think they would use them. We should have listened to you all and worried less. We are glad they left before this latest heatwave of 100+ degree days. Now that the Martins are gone, the sparrows think it's open season on the Martin houses. They are in for a rude awakening!

Thanks again everyone and we wish everyone a Happy Martin Season next year!

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Hi ROBNDEBBY.

Quiet at my house, too... Empty gourds hanging in the air look so lonely...
I haven't seen any S&S around lately - just the Mockingbird...

Time for me to take 'em all down and start working on renovations for next season. They'll be back before we know it!!

You guys had a great season! Best wishes to you for many more...
Sincerely,
Laverne
