My Martin Friends:

My girl is building a home just below mine next month. Her location for martins is as good or better than my site. I am thinking seriously about erecting a house & a few gourds near her home to give the martins another choice. She is much more pretty than I & just might make a difference. Cutting through the silly talk my friends, has anyone ever seen someone else that was successful before their neighbor was, even though they put their house up first? Thanks so much for any help!!

Hi Ronnie,

IMO someone has to be first  What do you have to lose? If her house is going to be that close to yours whichever gets martins first has got to help the other in starting if nothing else in overflow from the starting colony to the other.

I say go for it it should double your odds of attracting PMs to your area.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Oh, yeah, Ronnie.

The Purple Martins don't care if your housing has been up for 100 years. If there is another site that is just a little bit more to their liking - then, to the other site is where they will go. Now, I am strictly speaking of PMs who are looking for a "new" site. I firmly believe that it is impossible to truly steal someone elses successful birds.

I remember you have been seeing PMs flying around and over your site. So, we know they are in the area. Eventually, if the other site is well cared for and isn't allowed to die off each spring in horrible freezing weather - you should see some SY overflow.

Good luck on colonizing your new sites.
Sincerely,
Laverne
