Hi friends. Last week we located the local premigratory roost consisting of what I believe are local (within several hundred miles) birds. It is at the norhtwest corner of Staples and Saratoga in the Summit apartments beside their pool All martins are roosting at sunset in a large ash tree. I estimate the count between 5-10.000, most arriving right at dark. My experience tells me that most of these birds will leave before the end of the month and cross the gulf to the Yucatan and Belize. We will see few martins again before the end of August when other larger roosts are possible numbering around 100,000. Later roosts will fluctuate in numbers until mid October when all martins will have left the continent from this area.
