Hello Martin Friends:
I have been trying for 25 years with no luck. Throwed everything at them
except my kitchen sink. May throw it before I die but I live at a new
location now. and wow, what a location. Their is no way they could want
a better place to nest. With super open spaces, ponds, and everything else around, this location alone should attract them, but no luck here at the new site this year. Have 12 gourds on a PMCA rack & a tg 12 Trio houes converted to 6x12 rooms. I let no other birds nest here but do have bluebird houses far off from the martn house.
My SY came the 17th of May. My holes were plugged & went right away to open them. He stayed for about 6 weeks bringing in a few females. I have seen as much as 5 here at one time. When the female come in he would go into the tg 12 room & call for her vigorously. She amost went in a few times. When she would fly off he would go after her & could hear him calling clear out of site.
My gourds range from 91/2 to 12 inches. Both the gourds & house are about 12 foot high. I have watched these birds longer than the 25 years I have been trying. My friend lost his colony due to bad weather back in 1979. Other colonies & his I have seen over the years are not as good a location as mine. nor the housing come close as good but my friend and a few others got martins the first year they tried. Go figure!!! The only thing that could be wrong as I can figure, they just do not like my looks.
But I do feel like I have a much better chance at my new location & as long as I am able, I will be trying!! Can't wait until next year & I wiil be ready.
My SY Worked Very Hard!

Hi Ronnie, Sounds like your doing everything right and your location sounds excellent.
Since you did have the sy visitor so long maybe he will return next year and be more successful at getting a girl friend.
Keep maintaing your housing and try to be patient.
Best of luck to you.

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Hi Ronnie.
I'm sorry your SY Male was unable to convince a female to take a chance on a new site. As Dale said - when he comes back next season in his ASY feathers he will be much more convincing and should finally succeed.
Hang in there - we're behind you. Best wishes for good luck and many purple seasons in the future.

Ronnie, Your place sounds great, and I'm sure you're doing all the right things. The "right" female just hasn't showed up yet. In two of my seven years at this I've had a single SY male work his butt off for several weeks looking a mate. They'd bring them over one at a time showing the setups and his favorite gourd, but for some reason the girls did not find things suitable. I had hoped they'd return as ASY's and things would start to happen, but it wasn't the case....I enjoy attracting martins to my yard, and I'll be doing it until I start a colony or until I "kick the bucket", whichever come first
Just stick with it. She'll be there soon. Al
