The house sparrows are terrible this year! I have lost many eggs to the sky rat. Thank-you God for bring us the people who invented SREH, I don't even want to image how bad the starling would be if I didn't use them.

Attached is a picture of papa martin and his new hatchling. This pair is totally at ease when I do nest check and often stay in the whole time. I think it might be the pair that used the same unit last year. Both are very friendly.

It looks like a piece of cane pole in there. Did the martins put that in there or did you set that in there?

why is SREH? We get lots of sparrows but not martins that stay. We do clean out sparrow nests etc..

SREH is starling resistant entry holes. These cavity openings are shaped oblong or with "teeth" to keep out starlings (most of the time) but allow martins in. You can find out more about them in the archives. PMCA sells replacement doors in their catalog to fit some types of housing. Hope this helps.

Patriot - that looks like a type of reed/grass stalk we have here in TX. It is hollow and bends (note back of nest). Martins also like St. Augustine grass runners in our area because they are a lot like a stick when they turn brown.

I used oat straw as a prenest this year.
