Martin Colony History: 1995 - START

While many of my Southern friends are preparing to leave, CT PMs are just beginning. This is my 10th year as a landlord. Each year I go through what all of us do - the prep, worry and anxiety. It is always worth it. I thought last year was good but this year has been great. At my last nest check the PMs had 117 eggs and 37 babies and still one or two nests with only one or two eggs. Last year there was 29 pair. This year - 33 pair.
The camera is in one nest and now we have all martins all the time.
What a treat.
Also, for three years I have been mentoring a neighbor around the cove.
This was to be his last year, due to no martins. Finally, he has 3 nests with 17 eggs.

The best thing about June is roses and Martins at the same time.

All, have a great season.

Hi Sam
I was wondering just how well your site was doing this season well, i have
a bit of bad news the ocean storm we had last May killed my entire colony
i lost 20 ASY and 6 SY birds pure horror the price i pay for having a site
40 miles in land many sites north and east of me lost many birds as well
I have one pair of SY and Five eggs in Smithfield but very sad summer for
me. I am helping a country club with there martins in Rehoboth MA were
19 birds were found and they have no one to look over the colony so i told
them i would be more than happy. I am sure some of your young birds
probably will end up with me in RI or in MA. You are doing a excellent job
for martins in New England Thanks!!!!!! Ray in RI

SAMT - That is a beautiful site! I see what you mean about roses and martins. What a treat to wake up to that every morning. Thanks for sharing the pics.
