When is it too hot?

Hi all. I have a late nest of 3 young that are now 8 days old. Last nest check they look great and are growing. Parents are actively involved. The temperature is predicted to be 95 with heat index of 105. I have Trendsetter houses that are vented. What do you think? Too hot or worrying for nothing? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Brent

Hey Brent,

Think they will be ok, the vents will keep the air circulating, even if its hot air. They will just lay low and pant. Many, many years of 110 to 114 heat index, and needless worry drives me to say they will be fine. Remember their body temp is 103.

We have 2 two day old chicks, more to come I think....and its just now July, going to be real real hot....even so they will be fine.

Don't worry about the unfortunate, disadvantaged?? Where is your Data to back up your claim of only. 0001?

Thomas, Regards my data to back up the .0001% claim of mortality due to heat stress. I have none; it was just a figure of speech. Heat stress mortality must affect some percentage of clutches but I still maintain it's a minor issue when compared to martin losses due to climate change, nest competition with house sparrows and starlings and habitat loss in the winter grounds. First off I love Louisiana but dang you boys and gals down there in LA/TX deal with some oppressive heat...It's the night time temps I'm always amazed at this time of the year when I occasionally get that way...

I view it as heat/humidity/moisture events are perfect breeding grounds for mite explosions in the colony but with a late pair I'm betting everything will be fine...nothing wrong with a little worring, that's what people that are full of love, tend to do the most... Hope your season was peaceful.

Hi Brent.. the 94 highs we’ve been having aren’t a threat… as long as you’re vented , you’ll be ok.. once it gets above 98 , the heat may become an issue, but venting helps..
