Martins were back early, lots of showing homes and carrying on. Figured some females had arrived, so got the binos just to watch and well one has purple spots and that unshaved look about him.
Trouble is brewing already, he inspected an upper gourd occupied by one of our first birds. He's gonna get whipped...
Plenty of room and have those two gourds unopened.
Good to see them!

Yikes! Here comes trouble! lol Sign of a healthy colony though.. Congrats!

Funny you mentioned thinking it was some females arriving. I was thinking the same thing but I have one that sure is acting like a subbie yesterday and today, Crazy teenager flying… Haven’t been able to get a good look, only a quick glance. Binos will be on the patio with me in the morning. I usually don’t see SY’s till beginning of April.

By the way Tom, Did any of your “one eyed” martins make it back for the season? 👁️ lol

Sounds like a subbie Phil, even the younger ASYs act like subbies don't they?

You know I was looking yesterday for him! Him and the one with the white spot. Have not been able to put eyes on the one eyed guy or spot boy yet. But heck if he did make it, he may be at my neighbors. He is hustling and bustling with martins.

The younger ASY’s sure do act like subbies. Weather was rainy and windy today, they stuck close and I didn’t see any subbies so maybe an over zealous young ASY.. I did have a really odd looking female show up today. White head and dark, racoon looking eyes… Took some picks with my phone so kinda grainy. I’ll try and attach to this thread. She had a hard time finding an empty cavity and flew off with 2 ASY males after sunset, I hope she comes back after dark or tomorrow so I can get my wife to take some pics with her good camera..

Definitely let us know if one eyed guy and spot boy show up. It would be really cool for him to make that flight with one eye! Good deal your neighbor has tons of martins! Is his house right next door to yours? It would be nice to have neighbors with housing up.

Phil that is one pretty lady!!! Oh wow! Very unique. Boy, hope she comes back for you. Wouldn't it be interesting if her chicks get that trait?
Too pretty. That's neat!

Thanks Tom! She is pretty! She was back this morning. I could see her from my lanai.. Can’t miss her, she looks like a purple Q-tip.. And when she’s flying looks like she’s half Martin, half eagle… lol She’s been going to the house, so maybe one of my house martins this season. I think I still have 3 or 4 compartments still left in the house, everything else is about full.

She looks great phil! Had my first SY show up today, too… I’m glad i still have a few compartments left.. saw a sharp shinned attack this morning.. the Martin did a quick side step then escaped.. smallest hawk I’ve ever seen.. had to have been a young sharp shinned… his attack approach looked a little hesitant.. the Martin took advantage of his mistake and got away.. but I’m sure the young hawk will learn from his mistake.. so.. He better not let me see his perch spot.… that’s for sure..
Good luck..

Thanks Linda and Rob.
Congrats on your first SY showing up today Rob! Glad you have some room left for them to go so they stay out of the ASY’s hair for a bit… lol Sorry about the hawk attack, so annoying.. Glad he didn’t get any birds though. I hope you find his perching spot very soon!

Hi Linda! Lol I saw her coming and going for 2 days checking out gourds and the house. I’m at work and haven’t gotten to see the morning activity the past couple days but haven’t seen her come in at sunset. It’s fast and furious at sunset so I may have missed her coming in.. I’ll definitely be watching morning social hour this weekend and looking for her. Thanks for asking Ma’m.

Oh yes! You’re welcome. You may have you a “Ms. Buddy” on the horizon, lol. We have to watch out for her, she’s special lol.
