17th Annual Purple Martin Workshop/Seminar
March 15, 2025 A workshop/seminar on attracting Purple Martins will be held Saturday, March 15, 2025 beginning at 9:00 A.M. at the CAM Iowa Clothing Center (1005 Nutmeg Ave.) 1.8 miles north of Kalona, IA on Hwy 1 and one mile east on Johnson-/Washington Road.
Morning speakers will be:
Becky Crooks (Iowa City, IA) on “Supporting Our Pollinators” with advice on best practices for protecting Monarchs and other butterflies, bees, and insects.
Anna Buckhardt Thomas (Boone, IA) on “Supporting Wildlife Where You Live.” Anna is the Avian Ecologist with the Iowa DNR’s Wildlife Research Section. She’ll talk on 5 key actions people can take to create habitat in their own backyard and give an update on avian flu. The afternoon martin program will feature Dan Vogler (Columbus Junction, IA) speaking on “The Ins and Outs of the Purple Martin.” An experienced martin landlord, Dan will share his insights into attracting and caring for these birds.
After Dan’s presentation, a panel of experts will answer questions, followed by our always-popular door prizes and charity auction.
The Purple Martin is one of our most wanted songbirds, since a well maintained colony brings joy to any yard or neighborhood. Martin
populations are rebounding across North America as people put up
improved housing and learn proper monitoring techniques. Establishing a new colony is now a realistic possibility for many people. Anyone wanting to start or re-establish a Purple martin colony, or in need of assistance in maintaining a colony will benefit from attending this program. There will be a $3.00 registration fee (children 10 and under free). Lunch will be available at the midday break. Vendors are encouraged to set up displays of interest to program attendees.
