Hello all,
I have an 18 gourd colony and need to replace some caps.
I'm looking for some feedback on the vented gourd caps.
I would appreciate your experience with them. đź‘Ť
Have a great season!

Hello
I vented my caps and my T14 houses
Chose not to go with the elbow vent
Made mine with PVC wire covering that had 2 flanges

Cut a piece any length Put cotton in each end for winter
Removed for hot weather Vent holes drilled under it
Somewhere on this site I posted pictures [ Later

Like bond, I vented a few caps for the PMCA excluder gourds. My plan was to unplug the cap vent over 100 degrees...(gourds have vents). Honestly I never unplugged the cap vents even during the high heat. The martins did well.
If you feel better getting vents, its easy enough to do yourself. If your gourds are vented, you will be ok with half inch vents. Just drill it out, insert the vent, orient it down and seal it.
Hope this helps,
Tom

All my gourds have ventilated caps plus ventilation on the gourds themselves. It gets VERY hot and humid here once summer arrives. IMO you can’t have enough ventilation in the deep south, air flow is the key to help reduce the humidity in the gourds. When the temps are steady in the 90’s I remove the plugs. I rarely have jumpers at fledging time. Good luck this season.

Hello
I buy a $5 5 foot piece You can cut several pieces
I tighten my round cap Lay a piece up to the cap Mark my piece for position when
Cap is tight

Drill as many 1/2 inch holes as you want in the lid
Pop rivet flange piece over the holes
Use cotton for ends

Google this for a picture Cost $ 5 + for 5 foot

I believe in as much venting as possible.. so very hot and very humid here, in se Louisiana.. I vent the caps and the back top of all gourds, to create a cross wind effect inside the gourd.. I open the vents when the chicks start getting their feathers… as long as it’s above 90 degrees..
good luck
