Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go. :)

I have a male— who has not gone in his compartment yet and it’s 8:30 pm. He just sits on the porch! Very weird. Seems like easy pickings for an owl. I’ve seen this before.

I’m not sure if this male belongs to the compartment or the compartment has the pair that’s normally in it and he’s just stuck outside without a place to go. Or maybe it’s the actual male that belongs there and the female hasn’t come back.

I feel bad for him.. but I suppose he knows what he’s doing. There’s plenty of purple Martin compartments two doors down.

Same here… Stood outside and had a staring contest with him for an hour after sunset… He finally decided to go into #5 gourd, I was thinking to myself, bad choice dude there is a pair in there… Lots of fighting, he finally came out and flew off. Had a bunch of new birds show up the past few days so I think he just hasn’t picked a gourd yet or figured out which are occupied yet…
Last year I had a male that had a nest with 4 babies in it. The entire season he would come in at sunset and sit sideways across the entrance for an hour, drove me nuts.. 🙄🙄 lol Don’t know how he survived the whole season without getting eaten but he did and all fledged… Wonder what the heck they are thinking sometimes…

They sure do strange things! Gives us ulcers.
Early on, males will wait until full dark and try to sneak in compartments, but never had one act like that.

Wonder if its a ratio thing. Been watching my males go at it. I probably have 4 males for every 1 female right now.

I have more adult males than females. Do the ASY females arrive later than the males?

Well he did survive the night. Was still on the porch at sunrise .. and I did notice a female inside the compartment.. so my theory it may be the mate waiting all night for a missing female was wrong. I’m pretty sure it’s new male

I'd think the reason we may see more males at first is that last years sy or asy females just simply give out after raising babies and the long journey back. Just a guess.

It’s quite an amazing journey. It’s hard to believe that so many survive that epic round-trip.. and then do it multiple times.
