Happy 2024 Martin Season. With the return of our martins I have been expanding my site and moving poles around today. I rehab old houses and racks and was given a Fountain Rack on a 1.9" pole. The previous owner had no luck with his site and gave it to me to try (it's good to have good people around you). My question is does anyone else have this setup (whippy)? I was wondering if the rack spun in the wind or does the winch hold it all in place and prevent it from rotating?

I don't have that same setup but I have 2 T 14's both on round poles. What I have found is when the houses are all the way up there is not enough cable to allow the house to spin more than an inch or so. When I lower the housing down close to 1/2 way it will twist some but still not enough to change the overall orientation of the houses openings which is when you would have problems.

If you’re worried about it spinning when it’s fully up, you could always put a piece of all thread through the pole and cut a small divot in the part that rises up and down the pole doing it fully loft. It will lock into those slots divots that you cut.

… jhcox …. I was going to suggest the same thing…. I have a wooden gourd rack and I put a long bolt through the pole at the top and cut a “V” notch in the wooden spars. The “V” notches fit up against the bolt, no more spinning.. Works like a charm.. Thanks for answering the question..

Firefly,

I won't be much help as my fountain rack is equipped with a 2 inch square pole.

Without seeing your setup, perhaps you can insert a metal dowel at the top of your pole by drilling holes in the pole and inserting the rod. Then cut notches in your carriage so the dowel will slide into the notches. I vision a triangular notch with a round receptor at the bottom so the dowel will guide easily into the notches when the unit is winched all the way up.

My Trio has a similar method as it is on a round pole.
