Hey all,
I had a question for t-14 landlords in ohio or surrounding areas, do you vent houses?
I had a problem with jumpers last year and am thinking that may have been the problem.
thanks

Martin Colony History: 2020 - 1 pair SY, 4 eggs, hatched and fledged only 1 due to a lone male SY that carried some of the eggs out of the nest.
2021 - 2 pair SY, fledged 7, 2 lone male SY
2022- 2 pair ASY, 3 pair SY, 22 eggs laid, hatched 19, fledged 16. Also one pair SY that nested but did not lay eggs.
2023- 13 pair, 60 eggs, fledged 47.
2024- 21 pair, 94 eggs, fledged 75.

I have a T14 made with composite material (like the Trex decking material), no venting and so far have not had any jumpers, but this is only my 3rd year so not a lot of experience. I do use sevin dust to help control nest mites as I read somewhere that nest mites can cause jumpers.

2026-

Hi there, I'm a little south of you in central Kentucky. This is my third year with martins, second year with a T-14 house. My husband and I built our T-14 and added a soffit vent for each apartment- I think they were 2.5-3" in diameter.

Only four pairs used our T-14 last year- apparently the S&K barn is still the housing of choice. While I don't have a lot of experience with it yet, we didn't have any jumpers last year. The vents were pretty easy to install and were not that expensive. Happy to share more info if you're interested.

We have 6 T-14 Houses ...No vents, make sure you do a next change about 10 - 15 days after they hatch and you shouldn't have jumpers.....Cause of jumping is most likely bugs in the nest.

I am in Indiana, not too far from the OH line, west of Dayton. I have been using T 14's since I got started. I have less jumpers from the T 14 than I have from my gourds. The gourds are Troyers and have the vent holes drilled out. I treat all my nests with powder Seven each year a day or two before eggs are due to hatch and have never had mite issues. Assuming you nests stay dry the Seven will stay effective long enough to keep from getting a huge mite load before they fledge.
