Thank you all for the great advice you gave when I posted under the subject "they are not staying." I was very concerned about my new SREH entrances. Your suggesting that I be patient paid off. They are back and they are staying!! The starlings are frustrated but they are not getting into any gourds. When I changed my entrances before the season began, I did add porches onto many of the SREH entrances that I had bought years ago but had never used. The ones that have come back seem to be using both types of SREH entrances - those with and without porches. I'm so glad I made the change and now I don't have to worry about those "devil" birds anymore!! Woohoo!!

You made the right choice with the SREH. It is tough enough keeping the sparrows out. I can't imagine having to fight off the starlings too. There are hundreds of thousands of them in my area. I am glad for the most part I don't have to deal with them.

That's great you got if fixed.
I'm lucky I don't have to deal with starlings or sparrows. Don't know why but they just don't come around. I did have a pair of Red headed sparrows having a look at things yesterday but they have moved on. When I first put up my gourd rack my son was all excited that he was going to get to shoot sparrows and starlings. It's been four years and he hasn't fired a shot. He's bummed.
Keep a lid on those pests and you'll have a great season and many more to come.
Good luck to you.

Thats great! One less thing to worry about and your martins will be safer.
Id still shoot the starlings, they tend to try to dominate. Im glad it worked out!

A good house sparrow is a dead house sparrow.

That's good news for sure. I agree with continuing to eliminate the starlings if you get the chance. It's good knowing they can't get in, but some have reported starlings figuring out how to breach the SREH entrances.
