First arrivals for 2019 - today. Both ASY males came circling and squawking in as I filled my bird feeders. EVERY year, they arrive when I'm out in the yard.

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Congrats Kathy it never gets old does it?
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Martin Colony History: 85 pair in 2020. Seems fairly consistent the last few years.

Congratulations Kathy, and also to Jeff. After visiting with you and Jeff at the Springfield presentation on Saturday my wife and I got home and saw an ASY male on the gourd rack. I think it such a coincidence that we get our first arrivals close to the same time. Hope the weather continues to improve here in southern Mo. I changed email address lately and can’t seem to get my first bird reported. Will have to seek help. Sure hope you have a good season.

Jeff, I figured they would show up, if we would just quit watching the skies for them and go do something else!
Hope you have a great martin season!

Keith, it was great seeing you on Saturday! Thanks for attending. I was a little intimidated at first when they told me we had 68 people and I knew we were going to discuss HOSP and starlings. Then I noticed the Exit door real close to where I was standing and thought worst case, I can run.
