I have been using a repeating BIDDLE trap with some success, but I would feel more comfortable if I had several different sparrow removal strategies. I shoot them with my 4/10 and am currently working on zeroing in my new P4 pellet gun with scope. I use Bo 9 and 11 gourds and would like to ask if there is a trap that works in them and how is the best way to use them. I will also getting two blue bird house traps as well. I want to develop a strategy to trap sparrows all year long each and everyday. Sparrows are my public enemy #1. Please give me your best sparrow removal strategies. THANKYOU in advance!

Have had visitor every year 2014-24.
Two large trees removed in fall 2024 and moved T-14 to a more open location.
2025- 1 SY pair. Fledged 2.
2026- no pairs. One daily SYM here daily. Named him Riggs!

If you are in an erea where you can use a 4-10, then I would suggest the you try ‘quiet 22 rounds’. They are quieter than my pellet gun and very accurate. They are made by CCI. Two dead starlings already this morning with them. Wife doesn’t even know I shot. The quiets fly half as fast as a regular long rifle 22 rounds, which is good. They drop roughly four inches at 45 yards so you have to adjust for shots farther than you sight in for. Most of my craps are at 20 yards but some times when the flying rats are on my bluebird box at 45 yards I stretch out a bit.

2014, 1st year-a few lookers, no nests
2015-23. Visitors each year. But no pairs.
2024- most active year. 2-4 SY male’s hang out most days.
2025, 1 SY pair. 2 eggs, 2 fledged!! Other martins visited daily.
Still eliminating starlings and sparrows.

I live in the city limits and discharging a firearm could put me behind bars. I rely
on my air rifle (not regulated yet) and a Nest Box Trap. It does well specially
before the Purple Martins shows up. I plug the the entrance holes of the PM houses
then raise them up. With the entrance holes plugged, S&S do not have a choice
but to investigate the smaller, lower PM house looking NBT.

I also keep two or three sparrows in a cage with a Brad Biddle Sparrow Trap
in it and two PMCA Sparrow traps on top.

I suggest that you make one or have one made. I do not have to climb a ladder
or lower the PM houses to see what the catch is or is there a catch. The holding
cage is chest high.

I found a plan in the internet a long time ago and made a similar one. I made
mine from gutter flat stock aluminum. It's pre-painted and very light weight.

Great suggestions guys Thankyou. Tell me about the trap you put on the pole. How do you use it?

I’ve never heard of quiet 22 rounds. Where can I buy them and how much do they cost? My 4/10 actually can be converted into a 22 so that may be a great solution.

Ok guys I got out my S&K catalog and they do have traps for BO 9 and 11s so I will get a couple and couple of blue bird house traps so now all I need is a pole trap. Could you share the plans you used to make your pole trap?

Dan --- That sounds like a good round.. I have been told that a 22 long rifle shell can go down range up to a mile. How far down range do I need to think about with the quiet 22 rounds. just wondering..

Martin Colony History: 2020 - 10 nest sites.

2019 - 8 nest sites and 28 fledged.

2018 - Three mating pair. 12 babies, all fledged. Found one adult female dead in house. Cause of death - unable to ascertain. Very sad day.

2017 - First mating pair in Heath house. May 3-5: 5 eggs laid. June 1-3: all hatched. July 3: all 5 fledged.
Approximately 20 adult martins here for the fledge party.

July 1: Installed 4 gourds as well as the 3 houses. The Martins love them!

2016 - Many martins, no nests or eggs. Too many HOSP.
I have a 12 compartment Heath house I converted to a 4 compartment house to allow the Martins more room and hopefully evade owls. I have put in a second house, the S&K 12 compartment one which I converted to 6 compartments. My neighbor also has the same S&K house I converted to a 6 compartment house.
I have eight or more Martins that visit daily.

Death to HOSP

I use a pellet gun. Tried traps with no luck. Inside the house And outside.

Good luck! Can’t wait to hear about the babies!
May the Martins be with you.

James and Dave,
The Quiets are about $4 to 5 a box(fifty rounds). I did have trouble buying these at one of the local gun shops, but they do have them. A little cheaper if you buy a brick of them.(ten boxes) They fly 710 feet per second compared to regular long rifle rounds. Long rifly rounds are over 1000 fps. How far will they fly? Not sure but I would think it depends on the angle you shoot. and would be less the the long rifle.

When my Webley Raider pellet air rifle was functional, I used 10.6 gr pellets. I preferred this
over the .22 pellet or .22 bullet for it's size and weight. If there are any stray coming down, it
will not do damage to anything.

Yes I use a .177 pellet in a F4 cross man break barrel for just that reason. I t won’t travel a mile but it does travel 1000 FPS. It’s new and I’m still trying to get it zeroed in for use with the scope. I’ve gotten it to hit the target if I aim above the target by a couple inches.

I think I'm gonna get me another .177 cal pellet rifle. The question is which one to get.

There is one PM spending the night at my backyard. There are more hawks flying around
my backyard than any other species of birds.

I used to have 18 pairs and last year only one pair stayed.

I've a few starlings stop by and bounced around for a little while. As soon
as the saw me they all took off. I've also seen a couple of sparrows come around. The same
thing, as soon as the saw me, they flew away.

James this is the easiest way there is to rid your site of any house sparrows without baiting and shooting. Since using this method I’ve never had another sparrow nest in any house or gourd. Purchase a used Nature House trio with a telescopic pole.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a 8 or 12 room. Now you need to purchase at least 4 spare-o-door traps to be installed all on just one side of the trio house. Close off the remaining holes on that side and the opposite side. The only compartments with access are fitted with traps. There’s a area at your site that the sparrows are always seen or heard, this is where to install.
It needs to be installed between this area and your martin housing. It only needs to be raised 8 to 10 ft. ( the top of mine is 8ft at most. You want to face the trap entrances opposite from your martin housing and opposite your house if possible. It’s a little inconvenient but works best this way. Before you set the traps, lightly sprinkle dead grass and white feathers inside cavity. Just 20 blades or less. When the traps are set, leave a blade of grass or feather hanging from the entrance. No male house sparrow can stand it, they have to go investigate. It works that easy. Remember, you have to check this setup every day. I don’t have a sparrow problem like most. Once they begin looking for nesting site they fall victim. When you’re not at home to check just place a garbage bag over it.

Glynn
2019 26 pair 116 fledged
2018 20 pair 76 fledged
2017 19 pair 82 fledged
2016 13 pair 48 fledged
2015 3 pair 13 fledged
2014 1 pair 4 fledged
2013 2 pair 6 fledged
2012 0 pair

I don’t have the perfect site. One open flyway with trees within 80 ft. I do have a small pond they utilize during the heat of Summer. (2017) HEAVY HAWK PREDATION
