I have always wanted to mount a camera on a pole to face my martin colony. So it could be live and people could just look at it when they want. I'm not sure what kind of camera to get. Has anyone else tried this before?

I'm wanting to do the same thing but mostly so I can monitor my colony while at work. What I found are basically security systems that allow monitoring via your phone or tablet. There are many systems available so I will be looking for a system for my home security which I've been planning for a while with the added bonus of monitoring my gourds through the same system. Everything will be recorded on a DVR.
I have not selected a system yet but it seems a 4 camera system with a DVR is not too pricey. There are 6 and 8 camera systems as well. You can also get the NEST camera and do exactly what you are wanting to do. As you need more cameras you can add them to the one you have already. A guy at work has it and showed me his house on his cell phone. Pretty nice set up. only problem is you pay $10/month to have your video recorded via the cloud rather than have an in home DVR.
Started rambling. sorry.
Edited to add: although the video can be wireless, you will need physical wire for power to the camera so plan on that.

I'm trying to figure out he best cameras, how many i need and how I'm gong to wire them in. I may end up with an electrician however. Once I get them in they are there to stay. If I get it done for under $1400 then I'm good. That would include materials and labor.
I will definitely let you know how it works out. I've been looking at it for about a year now off and on.

Like is there anything that could be a Wifi on that doesn't need to be wired up? Like our house is about 25 feet from one of the houses. So like if I could mount the wifi controller inside the house and it able to connect with the camera to allow it to live stream?

That is possible but you will need to have power to the camera which will require wires be run to it via underground .Kyler wrote:Like is there anything that could be a Wifi on that doesn't need to be wired up? I have not used any of these personally. They appear they would work pretty easily as long as you could run power to them and they are in WiFi range.
Search for
"Foscam R2"
That particular one is for indoor use.
"Nest Cam" has some outdoor ones with possibly better features.
Or just searh for "Outdoor wireless IP camera".

I found this particular one which is the (Nest - Cam Outdoor 1080p Security Camera - White) if you want look that one up and see if you guys think it would work?
But I don't know if these are live. Like when you look it up will it be live? Or does it only film when it sees movement?

Yes these type of cameras are live. You install an app on your phone and you can look 24/7 what is going on. The live feature is the reason they need WIFI. Most also record. The outdoor Nest Cams I looked at have the live and record feature.

Then how could you make it live for everyone to see? Most the link somewhere?

Obviously the Hawkeye camera that is shown on this forum has the ability to have a link on a website that will allow the user to click on and view the footage. I'm wondering if the same camera, or a similar camera by the same company, will provide the solution to your endeavor. Perhaps the host of that link will be able to provide you some insight to that as well.

Nest Cam allows you to stream the video via a link. Depending upon how far away your Martin house is from your house, the WiFi may not be strong enough. Since I you will have to run power to the camera there are options to booster the WiFi signal. A simple WiFi booster might work, but a better option is a product like Netgear's powerline WiFi extender. It rebroadcasts your full internet speed, instead of boosting a weak signal.Kyler wrote:Then how could you make it live for everyone to see? Most the link somewhere?
