Question for Louise or other landlords .. Ive had a lone ASY male here since May 17th...Ive also had 3 females here going into nest boxes with the ASY male but none of them have stayed...Possibly the same females,, i don't know...The lone ASY male has been bringing in green popple leaves to the T 14 ...A little background ... The past 3 years all i had were visitors, no nesters.. But the previous 3 years i had one pair nest each year...The ASY male is doing his best to settle a female and i think i have until the middle of June or so for something to pair up...Im located one county south of the Canadian border in northern Mn between Grand Rapids and Hibbing...The best hope i had was on May 26 th when the male brought in a female around 2 30 pm and then were back again around 5 30 and they stayed until almost dark...Next morning just the lone ASY male was here...Any thoughts or suggestions or even words of encouragement........ASY male brings in green leaves but no female...?? I also had a lone SY male show up but he only stayed around for a short time and he took off headed north........Dave

Have you done a nest check lately? It is not normal as far as I have experienced for green leaves to be brought in unless there are eggs that need to be protected.
2017-5 pair
2016-4 pair- 18 hatched-18 fledged
2015-1 pair -Both ASY- 6 eggs-5 fledged
2014-2 pair- 1 ASY-M/SY-F-1 ASY pair - 7 eggs-7 fledged

Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.

I have had male martins bring in green leaves before they have acquired a mate. I think it justs shows that they are ready for nesting to begin, especially if he may have had a mate previously. It may also act as a stimulus for any investigating female to bond. Although frustrating for you that he has yet to interest a female, it may help to encourage one to stay. Think of it as a positive thing.

Good luck,

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

I had an ASY male one year here for 6 weeks and never attracted a female. He tried to persuade with green leaves. So he is just trying to get the ball rolling! My ball is still not rolling!!!
