Might have messed up - (Northwest KS)

I got home from school today and the ASY male was here and stayed for a long time! He flew off and I didn't see him. So, I thought that might have been a good time to lower the house and reset my (spare-o-door) and when I was just getting ready to raise it back up, he came back and was chirping really loud and after that I never seen him again for the rest of the day!

I think that he will be back. He may even come in right before dark. They act strange the first few days, never know if they will stay or not, but they usually do stay. I have seen them leave at night and be back early the next morning.

I think you will be fine. If anything it's a good sign that he came back chirping. He is showing some territorial behavior/connectivity to the site. If he doesn't choose your site it won't be because you lowered the house. You also are increasing your chances by controlling HOSP. Do you have a trio? If so which one?

Evan337, yes I do have trios I have two 12 compartments (MK12s) on one pole in my front yard!

Nice! I love the look of a trio. A really classic style house. I have a T-14 with 4 troyer horizontal gourds underneath, a PMCA wooden gourd rack I built with 12 excluders and 4 Troyer vertical gourds, and three modified trio grandpas. 52 total compartments and the first to go every year are the Trio Grandpas and it's not close. Those fill up before any of the other housing gets a look. I'm considering modifying the T-14 to see if it makes a difference in its demand/desirability.

Me too! I think they look nice! I also have houses in my back yard but I don't know why but not one martin will even come down and look at them. But I have them in the front I just don't get it. I have 3 12 unit gourd racks and 1 6 unit gourd rack and one S&K house which I have modified and made it a way better house and also a wooden 8 compartment house. It kinda looks like a t14 but it only has 8 compartments but is the same design! My photos won't load.

Yes I am using a iPad mini but I tried it on my phone and it still wont go.

Update! I got up around 7:00 am and their was two martins flying above the house I know it was the ASY male that has been here but I never got a really good look at the other one!!!

kyler I use an iPad and have to edit the photo to be a smaller image. It can be done just have to mess with it.

Good news sounds like you have birds interested in your site ,great to hear younger people intrested in wildlife and becoming a landlord well done keep up the good work

Thanks! I just dont get it that the PM's are here early in the morning and then they leave like all day. I still don't think that they have stayed all night yet but I'm still not sure.

No worries Kyler.
That's normal behavior for Martins that have not started laying eggs yet.
They hang out a bit in the morning, and head off for most, if not all day.
It's sort of like they're enjoying their last bit of freedom, prior to the real work with eggs and babies.
It's like the Martin equivalent of a "honeymoon phase"....

I use modified aluminum housing (Trio/Nature House).

Yes just like Matt said ,mine are building nest for a few hours in the morning then a few stay around but most stay out till around 7 pm about an hour before dark they start coming back. I agree they are enjoying the freedom before eggs and babies come

I ditto that Kyler I have 2 ASYM & 1 SYM with no females. Saw lots of PMs in air today with one female landing on perch but she did not stay. I keep telling these guys they better bone up on their romancing or they may end up bachelors. But I am curious how they are going to attract their mates. IS THERE HOPE ????
Maybe some of these seasoned veterans can give us some info on how this happens.

Like I said on the other thread. They just chase them. The female are so picky I've been 4 yrs. trying to get one to hold. The males have no problem coming in and staying but if you can get a female to stick consider yourself lucky!! I guess they want it perfect.
