hello from Northern Alberta Canada
Yes a new season is here. Our first martin arrived May08 on a cool windy day. Now today with temperatures above zero and sun our condo is almost full. That would be 10 pair and only 2 vacancies left. They are chirping and cooing to each and it is such a grand sight to behold. Love my martins so much. Being so far north it truly is a wonder for them to flap their wings all the way up here from Brazil

- Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.
Here in central Wisconsin, my first martin arrived April 10th. At that time, you were probably knee deep in snow. In fact, our lake had just thawed down here. This spring has been challenging for all. My martins have just begun nest building in the past two days, which puts them on par with last year. The cooler spring has not affected their timetable.
How long is your martin season? Do your martins wait a month before egg laying or do they lay earlier based on a shorter season?

I premake all their nests. So when they arrive on their long journey north they have a cosy warm place to land . I always see their little beaks poking out of their holes. As now it can be below zero at night
They start to lay eggs the beginning of July. Then hatch the first week.
Start fledging in August.
I do nest checks as we have a problem with blow flies. I remove the babies ( still young) put them in a can with a soft cloth and replace the nests. With blow flies you can lose all the babies. Last year we fledged 65 babies.
One family was late arriving. They stayed till mid September. I kept hoping the babies would fledge. They were huge and not wanting to leave the nest. They stayed and flew around until they were strong and then one day all 5 of them were gone. So very special.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Hi April! Below zero, huh? I knew they handled our lows in the twenties so good to know. Do you have to supplement feed very often?

Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.

As long as it warms up during the day and not freezing cold the martins do fine. Last winter in May we had a freak snow storm and I had a ladder up against the house and put dead crickets on each level. They did gobble them up so saved again.
Now it is nice and warm during the day , here nice is 16C or warmer. They have a nice house to cuddle in and boy they go fast inside when it is chilly.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.

Update. Our condo is full. 12 families are making nests. The trees just budded and actually have leaves now. I see the martins collecting dead leaves but no green leaves yet. What a wonderful site. I put out lots of straw on the ground for them.
