I had a ASY male show up yesterday and he didnt have any tail feathers.
My question is, will they grow back before he departs in the fall

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
Not sure. But I remember someone had that last year and posted about it. It seems if memory serves the martin did ok. Theory was it survived a hawk attack. I think.

Yes, they will regrow now, which will make his life a bit easier. They are able to adapt and fly well without a tail, as you've probably seen with this bird.
For the last 2 years I had a female grackle like that. I figured she had a bad mite infestation or something?

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
A hawk probably got a hold of them & he got away, less his tail feathers. It may make his flying a little difficult for awhile. He may not be able to get as much altitude.
They usually only molt out a few at a time. They will grow back, but it can take several plus weeks.

We used to loose complete tails on our raceing pigeons to hawks. They do need them to manuver quickly,but slowing down is there biggest proglem. In two or three weeks they are in pretty good shape. The real problem is at first they look differnt in a bunch and a hawk will pick that bird out from the rest. Sure they can fly but they get shosen first. I have never seen them having any broblem flying high with the rest of the birds ,they just stand out more.
