I have been watching in the evenings for any returning purple martins but no luck. Last night I decided I would start playing the dawn song again. This morning at 0500 I started the dawn song playing on the boom box. I came back out at 0730 and a male was sitting on a porch of the T14. After a minute I noticed a head poking out thru the SREH behind him. She pushed her way out and they both sat on the porch looking at me as I was watching them thru my binoculars. I guess they came in at dark and I didnt see them. Anyway, Im glad they made it. Installing starling resistant entrance tunnels and clean out ports on my gourds and hope to have them up next week.

This evening i had the dawn song playing and hoping to see some purple martins. I decided to lower the T14 due to pending high winds tonight. After lowering about 2 feet out flew 2 pair. I didn't even know they had been in there the whole time

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
I always noticed that the early arrivals very early in the season tend to go to roost very early. Sometimes a few hours prior to sunset even.
Found this out while feeding a few times. I thought they were out somewhere but then they came out of the housing when they heard me.
Anyone else notice this behavior early on?

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
Doug,
I would come out to greet you if I was a purple martin.
I watched your 4 YouTube videos on Supplemental Feeding. Impressive.
I thought some of your martins were going to eat out of your hand they were so anxious to be fed.

I was surprised because this was at least an hour before dark. This is first time I have noticed them going to roost so early. Late evenings I have been watching for them but never seen them until yesterday. I have seen them several mornings on the T14 so I thought they were roosting somewhere else and just coming to visit in the mornings.

Early to bed.... early to rise.. helps make a Martin king of the skies. lol
Mark,
Very close to sitting on my hand a few times. My deck is actually at the same eye level as the housing. They do come to me and take a toss less than a foot from my hand.
Like I said. It comes with the territory in Western PA. If I didn't feed I would not have them. If you notice in the videos there are a few new arrivals with wings drooping pretty bad. The others are healthy as can be and this was the 5th day of cold with no insects.
I stick with primarily egg in the AM and crickets and mealworms in the evening. Too much egg is not so good. Runny stools.
