After a nice 8 weeks of quiet, here we go again...Whistling and Cheeping and checking out my closed housing... So of course I opened a few choice spots (traps of course) to monitor. I am VERY impressed with the action of the One Fits All trap, as it is hair trigger sensitive, AND it fits in my Trendsetter 12! Yes, I know the S&S are not in nesting mode, but checking out sites for Spring... all fine and dandy by me. They can "Check in" and "Check out" any old time! So far, they are ignoring the baited repeater (white bread, millet), maybe it's still too warm. But I am going to keep at them over the winter. I imagine the absence due to this past season's trapping will be promptly filled in, sadly. My forecast is that I will bag as many if not more in the 2014 season.
Best regards to all my purple martin friends!
S&S are back from vacation.

Mama I bagged 62 sparrows and 96 starlings and like you said it was quiet for a long time. In fact I was wondering if my S&S pole trap was still working, however I found out yesterday with a bagged starling

Varmit activity here in Iowa was really sparse this year after June. The only reason I could figure was because of our severe drought conditions. I think they all congregated near bodies of water. Since we have started to cool down and have gotten a few showers I have noticed more activity. I have taken the house down for the season so the only trap available is the repeater built into my shed, it doesn't see much activity until the starlings start thinking about mating.

Thanks for the idea of placing the repeater trap inside your building. I am trying that when we get our garage built next year
I have often wondered why the holes in gables of garages. I thought maybe martin nests, and now another use for them. Thanks again.

Chris,
It works great - if you're familiar with the see saw type traps where they jump into a metal dryer pipe and fall down into a cage at the bottom. A 2" hole has worked well for me with attracting starlings.

I just noticed this too. S&S seem to be prepping for a hard winter and starting the search for nesting spots.
