No luck this year getting Martins to stay. Have a ASY female, (Lucy) who comes daily, has for 5 weeks, but no luck getting a male to stay with her.
She is Loud and Vocal and several Martins have flown in, over site, checked things out, landed but no other Martins have stayed.
We have same set up as last year, except we have had 2 dozen + trees (Mulberry, etc.) removed from our property. Don't know if this is the reason the other Martins won't stay or not.
I enjoy seeing Lucy each day so that is something.
Looks like we will have to wait until next year for babies, I HOPE.
At Least We still have lookers.
Joanne.

I am betting Lucy is a subadult male - they set up at new sites and try for female company. If the song has the clicky sound at end, it's a male. It's not TOO late yet - not yet... keep hoping.
I agree with Louise, Joanne. For several years before I finally had martins nest here, a young subadult male would come and spend the summer. He would bring in girls, show them the housing he was considering, and treat them like queens. Then at the end of the day they would fly off into the sunset, leaving him flying behind and calling to them piteously. So sad! But eventually one subbie male found a girl who was so taken with him that she couldn't refuse setting up housekeeping with him. And so it began. Don't give up! Ever! Took me 15 years!

YES,
I think Lucy must be a Sub Adult Male. He would call and call. It was hard to listen to him and no mate would stay with him.
Not seen any Martin activity for a week now, so I do think Our Year is Over. Unsuccessful but that is life.
Heat 92* Index 94* + next few days. UGH. UGH.
Then we will have a slight cool down.
So Now we will concentrate on 2014. Hope Everyone Had a good
Successful year. CONGRATS.
I have been super busy with mowing, garden, last but not least, Hubby.
Ha. Ha.
I had not planned on a big garden but guess what I planted a BIG one so
I get to spend a lot of time there. Ugh. Fresh Veggies U can't Beat, and they are SUPER HEALTHY, & FREE.

Joanne,
He will be back...Last year, our first year, we had 6 ASY pair and two SY males that stayed the whole season. This year, our second, we started out with 8 ASY males and ended up with 24 nesting pair and 14 SY males that didn`t find mates. Look out year three!
Keep the faith and good luck!
