Big shout out to all of you landlords that have gone above and beyond supplemental feeding your martins during these prolonged cold temps across the USA..I know it's not fun standing out in 20/30 degree temps, hands cold, fingers numb, flipping crickets and eggs. But all of us know, that if we want to enjoy this magnificent bird for the few months they are here, we will do our best to make it happen... Anybody that follows the PMCA Facebook page knows that I personally had a female martin land on my hat while i was flipping crickets because she was weak and hungry and I was very fortunate to rehab her back to health..moments like this make this hobby all worth while..I'm proud to be a Martin landlord and will be until I can no longer do it ..hope everyone has the best year ever..

I appreciate as well everyones efforts. I know that it is helping me obtain martins this far north. Please keep feeding them so that mine come back home.

Tony, I also thank all supplemental feeders as it is raining ice pellets north of you this AM. Swallows and Bluebirds doing good, .22 doing a good job on HS. population. Landlord with a large colony 6 miles from me no PM'S as of today,should see some this week. PS . There are those who drink Bud and then there are others who drink BEER. HA ha- Best of luck to you. Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

I don't drink beer. Yuck. Love Kahlua though! And I love those This Bud's For You radio commercials! I also love your hat bird pictures.

Yep, that was super neat that you could administer to that female bird like that and that she came to you in a time of great need. If she did not have a person that is so involved and looking after them, she would have died.

Your birds consider you a friend.
2008~(1st yr) 4 pairs, 11 to 12 fledged
2009~(2nd yr) 9 pairs, 41 fledged
2010~(3rd year) 11 pairs. 50 fledged
2011~(4th year) 20 pairs, 23 out of 23 gourds Martin occupied, 3 fledged, the rest died in the drought. (1 new Blue Bird, 3 BB fledged.)
2012~ 26 pairs, approx. 100-110 fledged

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

OK Tony.... I just finished my tax season (as a preparer) and I've been supplemental feeding and that beer sounds great to me about now.

Haven't had one on my hat yet so you got me there. I had the morning off serving at the Martin diner today as it warmed up again.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.
