Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Tony,

I know from experience.... the longer the wait...the sweeter the success.

Hang in there. Try to work with a nearby site or start one in a perfect location to maximize the offspring and have the ability to limit nesting pairs there by closing cavities to help push them your way.

It takes a few years but sounds like you still got a few to go.

I used a local lake 1.5 mile away initially to draw them to my area.

Doug
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

I'm currently helping a guy that lives about half way between myself and the elderly lady's house about 1/4 mile away. He hasn't had much success ether. Of course this is only his second year trying in an "open" spot. He's had his houses and gourds up for a few years but in the wrong location. I'm hoping to do just that "help him, help me!"

Gobbler t,
not sure of how open you are, , if you are close to high line wires , thats good, they like to perch on those, keep it in the corner away from trees. on this site, you can find a site on how to suggestions, on placment from dwelling , water ect, and houses,, how many yrds away to place the house.if you google (how to attrarct purple martins, )it brings up a site with ideas, not knowing where you are at , -- i hope this helps- good luck , it talks about, choosing the right location, increase your chances, put up managable housing, several short articals that may help you, practicing controlling house sparrows, and supplying these aids, if necesary, food, ect,
good luck

Pmcharter1,
That video was fascinating! Thanks for the heads up on that video. I would love to have a gourd cam at my colony. Right now I'm waiting for the wireless technology to improve to give a reasonable quality picture before investing in one as my T-14 is some distance from my house on my property. The gourd cams do provide fascinating insight. Thank you for the kind words.

Had me worried. I wish I could give you some of mine, we have too many for the amount of housing we have, the males are almost killing each other.

James,
i use a small clip on video pen on my visior of my hat when bow hunting, pretty good, we only have Bass pro shops in Ia, im going tomorrow and see what i can find that may also work for martin housing. i heard they make one that has a antenna, that connects to your router box that somehow, transmits the signal to video,. im not that tech savy , but, they do make a nice cam corder for short runs, with a sd card, and vedio, its a AIPTEK , Ihave a new version i use also when hunting, and its has a mount for a small tripod, i/4 inch, , they run around $100.00, has long as they are charged, they will give you a good video, make sure your sd cardholds max gbts, for memory, 8gig or better, the more you viedeo, the more memory you need if that makes scence. igf i find somthing this weekend, ill pass it along.

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

The past two years I had young ones fledge, quite a few visitors showed up as well. Not sure why, but maybe it’s more of a communal thing. I didn't hear any calls that sounded different but you never know .. it may be so subtle that I can't notice.

It surely wouldn't hurt to play a recording of all the chaos at fledge time :)

Good luck GT

Thanks PM Charter, I look forward to hearing what you find. I would have loved a nest cam this morning. Most of my ASY females were spending the entire morning frantically nest building and there were lots of new visitors, ASY and SY. So far it has been a great season. Hope you have one too.

Regards

Jim

james,
still looking, they have things that work, but pricy! im looking for somthing remote control, so when i want to video, i can have my camera mounted, then do so, when i want to., my aipek will work, , but that would require me to leave my small tripod attached, then, if i want to tape, lower the house, mount camera, raise, it, , dont really want to lower the house when there active, but it could work, if you done it fast. the playsport seems to be a good deal so far, but im still digging!as im looking for somthing for turkey hunting!ha, ill keep you posted, hope your colony is doing well, not so much here as we have been getting pounded with rain, migration all messed up for us, we need some warm temps. the ones we are getting are ragged, feed them eggs, and they have dissappeared, just keep wating!

pmcharter1, My site is as open as it can possibly be. I've had my mentor over to inspect as well as some other martin landlords and they all tell me the same thing, I'm good to go. They say the same thing as everyone here. Just be patient, they will come.

gobbler,
yes they will, im impatient, as youcan tell, ha, the best thing i did for my dad, last yr, he lives in the country, 2 acres, he had no highline wires for them to perch, i added perch rails on his housing, top to bottom, each side, seemed to help. its a great hobby, esp, when you can help others! Keep in touch Gobbler, this is as addictive than turkey hunting!, i love it!
good luck
