I could't access the article at the above URL. I did a search for Rick Rowe: and got this URL:

Is that the correct one?

Thanks for that link, Charles - really nice piece on the martins, too bad those old galoot landlords got in the way....

(you guys did great, Steve & Bob, except for not introducing the dog)

Martin Colony History: Had my site up to 22 gourds of which most (+/-3) stayed occupied.
Downsized to 17 gourds due to back surgeries. Had 14 families in 2017 but did not do nest checks due to health. Feeling better in 2018 and hoping for a good year.

That's the one! Thanks Charles....I've never seen that one and look forward to the new one. Thank you for the link. :)

Great publicity, awesome sight, and loved Bob's crack on Steve that " ... if he could lay an egg, he'd do it ...!" Of course, they understand each other, as we also do. Just this past weekend, my best friend was yet AGAIN, busting my chops in jest (and a good bit O seriousness), about my OCD passion for the martins!   .... 8)

Rick Rowe is the reporter who filmed our martin colonies and he is a great person to work with. He has a passion about his job!

He was supposed to come earlier in the morning when there would be hundreds of martins gathered around the housing. However, it was so foggy that morning and he was unable to come until later.

He arrived around 5:00 pm when few martins were here, but there were some. And soon after that some excitement happened. A migrant female sharp-shinned hawk dropped from the sky like a bullet and headed directly for my colony. But she saw all of us and turned away while several male martins mobbed her. He didn’t get a chance to film that.

Later on more martins started gathering around our colonies and Rick was able to get some good recordings of the martins.

This film was mainly one to get some basic publicity about martins without going into a great amount of detail about their biology and behavior. Bob and I did share some of this information with Rick. We also mentioned the PMCA to him.

We enjoyed visiting with Rick and I think he did a good job of “sharing” our martin colonies with his viewers. We hope that folks will want more information about martins and will visit our colonies. This will give us an opportunity to promote the PMCA, too.

Both our dogs were right there and trying to get on film! Bob’s dog, Dixie and my Dog, Possum Head wanted a starring role in the film as guard dogs for the martins!

Bob is a “teaser” and enjoys joking around! I haven’t laid an egg!

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Excellent!!!
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Thanks for all you do, Steve - and my sister really enjoyed seeing your site!

Enjoyed the video. Great presentation, and a look at a combined super colony. I think the overall presentation was great--where they broke away and Rick Rowe talked in studio about his own recollections of martins.

Rick has been doing this kind of thing for about 35 years. He did a story on my mother and aunt who are identical twins. They collected butterflies back in the 80's and early nineties. They have thousands of them , and still do. I wish I could share the story he did on them but the only way I have it is on a dvd disc.

The story was so good Rick sent the video to Carson Productions in Calif. The studio liked it so much that they invited my mother and aunt to be on the Johnny Carson Show. They were on the show for 15 or more minutes.

During the show when they were going to a commercial break Johnny gave a hand signal to keep them on longer than they were supposed to because he liked them so well. My family was just in awe and couldn't believe they were on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson".

After their 15 minutes of fame on that show they were invited on several other talk shows even back to the tonight show with Jay Leno.

I am very proud of my mother who has recently been diagnosed with bone cancer. I appreciate any prayers for her.

I understand this is the "Purple Martin" forum and this has nothing to do with the martins. I respect Louise and every one else who is on here. I just had to share the story about my wonderful mother and her 15 minutes of fame and I owe it all to Rick Rowe.

Great video. I always enjoy seeing your colony photos and this video really showed the impressiveness of your super colony. Nice job.

Malcolm.

Wonderful story concerning your mother and aunt. Thanks for sharing that story and also the lead into Steve and Bob's video. Prayers to your mother, the martins and all that we hold dear to our hearts.

May the joyful sound of the martins bring us all peace.

I am glad folks liked the video of our martin colonies.

I appreciate Malcom's original posting about it and him sharing that touching story about his mother and aunt.

Malcom, Rick sure is a fine man and Bob and I really enjoyed talking with him.

We invited Rick to return later in June when hundreds of martin fledglings are flying about and coming to roost in the colonies. Last year several thousand martins roosted in our colonies during late June. He may try to do a follow-up story on this.

Thanks again to Malcom for the post and hope everyone is having a great martin season so far.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

That was excellent! Here is the post I did with the link on my personal facebook page. My friends/family tease me too about my martin whispering passion. It is fun to share some other "nuts" with them!

Here is a link to a news story from Louisiana featuring Steve and Bob. Who? Rock stars in the purple martin world. Steve posts frequently on our PMCA forum and I have learned a lot from him. Matter of fact, I chose the style of housing I wanted to offer and shortly after he wrote a post about that house and how it is his choice and why. That in itself validated my future purchase which I made this year. As Pamela Fruechting said, tis the season! Check out this video...you will see there are other "nuts" out there just like me! Btw...the two dogs are named Dixie and Possum Head. Gotta love that!

Just last night I shared about my flipping success and quickly realized maybe I should make dinner for my husband. Seemed rude not to after I stood out there and flipped forever.

Malcolm, I obviously get off on side tracks. As much as I enjoy learning the lessons that are shared, I love hearing our personal stories and getting to know all of you fellow nuts just as much!

Have a great day!

I'm sorry that Steve and Bob's airing is no longer available but I wanted to share my mother and aunt's story that Rick Rowe recently did. This is not martin related but is an update to what I posted a couple of years ago.....Rick Rowe was asking where my mother and aunt were after 30 years.....

http://www.ktbs.com/story/28041553/rick ... utterflies

There will be an update to this tomorrow.....as soon as I can get the link I will add it.

I hope this updated post is OK Louise since it is not martin related. Martin's do eat butterflies though!!

Both links listed in first two posts have been removed or no longer available. I'd like to see it. Is it available any where else?

Thanks

Tim I'm sorry but as I stated they are no longer available. If for some reason Steve could have saved it he may be able to repost it but I'm pretty sure there are copyright laws and he doesn't have it.
