Dawn song
Hello everybody, i had two pairs of martins last year and this year there has been just one older male coming and going. Should i play the dawnsong cd or will this one martin be enough to attract others. A friend of mine who lives a mile away has many martins and its hard for me to watch when i just have the one.

2013-1 pair, 2014-4 pair, 2015-8 pair, 2016-12 pair 60 babies :-).
If he is actively trying to attract other martins, then I would let him do it. It couldn't hurt to play dawnsong CD when your martins are not present.
I am 43 years old and have loved martins since I was 10 years old. My neighbor was very old and got me interested. He died and I took care of his house and put up two of my own.

Digger...i am pretty much in the same boat as you....had one nesting pair last year, right now i have 2 males hanging out and spending the night. i have been playing the dawn song about every other day/all day long....doesn't seem to bother my males, and lots of activity and visitors either way...don't know if it helps, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

2011....still only one nesting pair..extreme heat killed the babies

Just remember, hawks know the sound too! Overplaying it can have undesirable consequences. I would play it in the morning, but certainly not all day.

Play the dawnsong in the dawn. my future daughter in law says her grandfather played the dawnsong for years and never got a martin but the summer after he died and was not around to play the dawnsong his site got martins. I believe it may be good in the dawn to attract subbies but playing it on a loop all day may cause confusion. there are so many opinions out there but I found this story intriguing. I honestly believe martins knew of his site but may have been confused by the sound of a martin but could not see it. I believe playing it from 4am to 7am is adequate. Your martin is better advertisement than the dawnsong any day. success!
