I was lowering the housing the other day, to inspect some things. I noticed there were two, ASY males, really tangling over a compartment.
They kept fighting, even after lowering the housing, and even looking in the compartment.
The male that was not winning the spat, flew out after a few minutes. The male that won, was so proud, and protective of his winnings, that stayed in the nest, even after I pulled the nest tray out. My reason for pulling the tray out, was after seeing he was sitting tight in there, I wanted to make sure the reason he was staying put, was that he wasn't hurt.
Turns out he was in perfect shape. He just did not want to give up his winnings!
The first photo is him, sitting in the nest tray.
The second photo is him, after rushing back to that compartment, before the house was even lifted all the way up.

Matt, I am impressed - you got the Pillsbury Doughboy to help you do a nest check!

(hee, just enjoying your gloves and being silly :-)

Neat photos and experience - thanks for sharing

That's pretty funny, Matt! Usually, I only have the females take the whole ride down!

Matt:

Thanks for posting the pic's. I never had a male stay in the housing when I lowered it. One other possiblity for this is he was just so exhausted from the fighting, he was unable to fly.

Hi Tim.
That's certainly a possibility. He was definitely not breathing hard, and when I held the nest tray up closer to head level, he flew right out.
But maybe like you said, he was tired from the fight, and had a few minutes to rest while I was checking on him, and snapping pics.
Can I still think that he was just not wanting to give up his newly-won nest?

Saw the same thing on Tuesday Matt. But I had a proud female that stayed in a gourd after the "loosing" female few when the system was lowered.

I opened the gourd lid and I swore she winked at me! Never left the gourd as I finished my inspections and raised it back. I saw her finally poke her head out and later resume flights with you male partner.

They do some amazing things and why they are such a joy to host... 8)

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

That's a great story :)

Reminds me of my male ASY. He's been doing the same thing. I'm pretty sure now he's the same ASY from last year. This fella seems to chase off every new bird that appears and has me wondering if it's the reason I only have one pair again. :)
