Martin Colony History: First breeding pair in 2011. Site moved up hill 350 feet at beginning of nesting season
2019 to accommodate road construction.
Colony seems to have weathered the upheaval

I have been monitoring a group of subadults at a new site in Cold Spring New York. I had six birds, one was taken by an owl or hawk which left five. Two pairs nesting and I assume a widower, There is a lone unhatched egg in one gourd that I think must have belonged to to unlucky one. I thought it was a sub-adult male but it might have been a female. Now at this late date for the last week I have spotted at least five other Martins flying around and exploring the unused cavities. Could they possibly be nesting at this late date? I am surprised to say the least - and ecstatic after breaking two eggs in one nest and losing 3 of the four fledglings in the other nest - to an owl most likely. Thoughts?

Probably just visitors from a nearby colony, and possibly some fledglings looking for a place to live next year. About 2 weeks before all my martins left I had a huge number of subbies showing up and hanging around.

mine are due to fledge in 4 days and I have an ASY pair and a few subbies hanging around. They've been really helpful in chasing off the murder of crows and several varieties of hawks. More than likely scoping out new digs for next year. However, when the young fledge, these "hangers around" can get pretty rough on the fledglings.
