How Do I remove the handle from my Break Winch? Ive seen martin landlords do this on You Tube but I could not figure out how. I went to my rack to try to knock it off but it does not work.
Ive also seen people on You Tube pad lock the winch. That would be nice to know how they do that also.
How Do I remove the handle from my Break Winch?
This is how I padlock my winch:

I'd be interested in knowing if there is a better way. I figure locks are mostly for keeping honest people out and that this would deter the casual hooligan, but probably not a determined one.
Hey enterprising brake winch manufacturers, how about a built in locking feature?

You could wrap a small chain around the pole and crank handle tight enough so it can't slip past the handle and then padlock the chain.

I have the break winch crank with handle.
I have the DLB350A Break Winch from DUTTON-LAINSON COMPANY.
I looked at the chain set up that was posted. My pole is not attached to a dock so I am unable to make that work. It would be nice to believe that no one would mess with the break winch while your gone but kids in the area are willing to try a daring prank on anyone. So I must try. I have a school just down the street and teenagers walk by all the time down the side walk.
I took off the nut and spring that are screwd on AFTER the handle but that does "not do anything." So I tried to then bang it off the handle but it would not budge.

You can't really remove it as it is an intergral part of the braking system. You can buy the two piece removable replacement handle from the PMCA Shop though. http://purplemartin.org/shop/product_in ... 46b41681b6

Do not try to take the handle off, especially under load or you may get your housing on top of you! The handle screws onto the shaft clockwise.
Dutton Lainson also offer a removable handle and hub assembly.

If you are worried about kids and vandals, this is your best option.
Just get a piece of chain that is long enough to wrap around the pole once and the winch handle a few times and lock it in place.
Try to get the cable wrapped on the spool where the handle is pointing up or down and chain and lock it in place.
Don't over think it - just lock it!
BTW, the picture with the slack chain is a BAD example - you could slip the chain off the handle real easy if done like that.
Cheers,
Joe

Joe,
Thanks for the idea on wrapping the chain around the handle a few times.
I did realize the chain was slack after I posted the picture. That picture was actually taken before the martins returned. It's better now.

thanks for the photo. Great example. I have the exact same equipment as you do.
There are people that hate birds and hate nature. I actually run into these types of people that grumble at my appreciation for nature. All they do is have a love affair with the tv. Some of these people I have to live with. Some of these people are my neighbors as well who hate the dawn song that I play and would actually wish for me to stop playing it. Im not home all the time so I thought it best to do this. After all its a lot of trouble to get these birds to come and to make a home out of the site that you prepared for them. I dont want to lose this because of some dumb prank.

Greetings,
Yeah, my racks are off the beaten path but are next to a parking lot used for weekend activities.
Kids will be kids and sometimes don't think about what they are doing so i can't fault them, only their parents for not teaching them respect for others.
Some of the older "children" know better but destroy other folks property anyway, just for "funsies"....
We all share our love and concern for our birds and this forum helps us learn from each other.
Thanks to PMCA for everything you do for our babies!

I'll post a pic shortly.
We put up ten new Creative Universe set-ups around the school district so security is a big deal.
Another detail is that we are affixing a 5ft length of lighter chain to the safety pins (the one six ft up the pole) with a small hose clamp screwed down tight, this chain spirals down the pole and the other end is hose clamped to the end of the heavier chain around the winch.
This we hope will keep the safety pins from walking off at some point.
To top it off we affix the predator guard so that the top rests on the safety pin, hiding it from sight. Plus this elevates the predator guard clasp above the line of sight of most people (though it can still be reached), as well as rendering the predator guard more effective by elevating it above the ground.
I'll post pics shortly.

a) Here's the safety pin, chained to the winch chain....

b) ...and here's the predator guard mounted atop the safety pin...

The astute will note that these are two different poles, and in no case does "a" coincide with "b". That is because this is a work in progress, and we are making it up as we go

Just another idea: I use the ez off predator guard as a lock and winch cover. Some of these removable guards have a latch at the top that can be locked. I added a slightly more heavy duty latch to the bottom (downside, it may provide a toehold) and then lock a light chain that's looped around the winch handle into predator guard.
Using the guard as a winch cover reduces its wobble some, but it's another approach that may be suited to some public sites.
