Another post says make an oblong hole that's 7/8 of an inch wide. Here's a link to it:

My house came with two types of entrances, one round towards the top and a crescent shape one towards the bottom. The crescent shape is suppose to be the best to prevent starlings. The one problem with this one's shape and being towards the bottom with the nest build-up inside, it made for a difficult entry for the bird. So I plugged it and used the round hole which is higher and much easier for the birds to enter. So far no starlings. I'll worry with that one some other time.

Hey Bill,
Two tree swallow entrances were provided with a plastic gourd I purchased.
The round entrance measures one and a half inches in diameter.
The slot entrance measures seven eighths of an inch high by two and a quarter inches wide.
Don't know if they are the smallest opening a tree swallow can enter but they seem to keep larger birds like sparrows out.

Hi ky395,

I have a couple BoNINE gourds that have an entrance for tree swallows. It is as Bill Pec said. Oblong, 2 1/2 inches wide and 7/8" high. This is supposed to allow Trees in but keep house sparrows out. This is my first year with them but hope they work as described.

You can probably google "BoNINE" and find more information on the entrance hole.

Good luck
2009, 1 pair of SYs w/4 eggs - wait, no 4 babies and all 4 fledged. What a great experience.
2010, 2 ASY pair and 2 SY pair 18eggs / 14 fledged.
2011, 12 pair with 49 eggs, 43 fledged.
2012, 20 pair with 113 eggs as of 1 June
2013, 22 pair with 112 eggs as of 9 June
2014, 23 pair with 113 eggs

For those of you who are making the slot entrance to keep house sparrows out of your tree swallow houses, it has been suggested by one member to use a caliper to make sure the hole is the correct size. That may be why the slot entrance doesn't work for you.
