- Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.
Congratulations Linda! Hope many more follow her to your colony this year. Best of Luck for a great Martin Season

I want to offer sincere thanks to everyone that replied, and thank you for your well-wishes. I have already taken up more PMCA Forum space than I should, so will not address you individually, but thank everyone for the replies to our first return post.
Our little female just returned at 5:40, and again without ceremony. She very quickly entered a SG #3 on the top tier of the rack (the rack is still lowered).
She must have changed gourds during the night because at 7:10 this morning she exited this same SG. She exited and left before I could offer eggs on the feeding station, but I think she had a great feeding day, as temps were high and the sun was shining.
She appears to be operating solo right now, but I am sure that will not last for long. The minute an ASY male shows up, I would guess she will have a date for the season.
Again, I would like to offer special wishes for all of our wannabies........I was one for a very long time, and am eternally grateful for the support and encouragement offered by the senior landlords at that time. I only hope many of you experience the thrill of spotting your very first martin at your site...........It is an unbelievable joy. I hope I never become *senior* enough to ever forget the feeling, or experience the thrill.

Linda, Congratulations! Last year, my first martin back was also a female. She was here for about 3-4 days before her knight showed up. I really admired her courage...I guess being female myself made me feel especially attached to her. I kept a close eye on her and thought of her often and admired her strength and bravery - how special she was to take off on her own and stay here by herself - she was like a little queen.
I know we shouldn't apply human traits to animals, but I love independent women! Ok, enough being sappy - hope you have a great year!

Hi,
New to the forum. I grew up in Southeast Louisiana with lots of martins every year. This is my first try at attracting them in Tennessee. I have up 6 S&K gourds with tunnels to start.
Good to see they've made it to Adamsville. I'm checking my housing every day!

Welcome!
I think you will be very successful in attracting them. Will you be playing the dawn song? Is your area pretty open?
This is a wonderful place to learn so much. Good luck.

I'm all set with my six gourds hanging in an open area. About 40 feet from the nearest tree and about 30 feet from the house. I put pine needles and wood shavings in each gourd.
For the first 2 days after putting the gourds up, I was happy to see starlings unsuccessfully try to get into the half-moon openings. I also put up a bluebird house on the nearest tree (40 feet away).
...also ready to do nest checks and fight an ugly war with HOSP and Starlings if I need to!

Linda, I was just thinking about you yesterday and that you should have martins in the next few days. I am so happy and excited for you....Yes, it is such an awesome feeling that these little guys remembers us every year and raise their babies in our backyard, trusting us.
I always feel life is better when the martins are back!!! Wishing you a happy, happy 2011 martin season
