Here are some martins that are living in light poles next to the federal prison in Tallahassee. You can see one just as he is going in the entrance at the back of the light.

I can offer these martins a better home. I've been trying so long and these inmates have it so easy, that's the martin that is.

Hey Yall,

I know I'm not the only one to think this. It may be in poor taste but I'm gonna ask any way.

IS THAT WHAT YOU CALL A REAL JAIL BIRD?
Guest

Well, are you going to do a nest check?

Harley - Best line I've heard in a long time. Very well done! If I'm not mistaken, you are or were in law enforcement. I have a brother that is too. I don't know how y'all come out of that environment with a sence of humor. It can be depressing work.

Hey RxPurple,

I try to not offend anyone but every once in awhile I just can't resist the obvious. Yes I was a city police officer for 20 yrs. I now work on the federal side. Most of my later years were spent as a supervisor. Some I spent as an investigator in Robbery/Homicide.

You asked me how I kept my sense of humor. For the most part I didn't. I'm not trying to preach to any one but when I gave my life to the Lord, the terrible nightmares went away. The drinking went away. The hateful angry person went away. I truly am a new creature. I found something I truly love to do. WATCH THESE BEAUTIFUL PURPLE BIRDS!!!! That's probably more info. than you expected but you kind of asked. I'll never miss an opportunity to praise my Lord. Even if it might mean I could get kicked off of a forum.

Great photos Wyatt!

Thanks for posting them!

Those appear to be the same type of mercury/sodium vapor street lights, that forum member Stephen Cruse posted some photos of, that also had some Martins nesting in them.

Hopefully no starlings find there way to those lights.

Thanks guys,

I think these Jail-birds are on their own - I'm not climbing the pole for a nest check! I do wonder how hot those lights get though.

Here's a picture of a broken light that shows there is plenty of room in there for a nest, and it may even be dark inside!

As far as I can tell, Tallahassee is remarkably free of starlings and sparrows.

This definitely becoming a trend in Florida. I have witnessed this on many occassions in the central florida area. This would be great fo rthe species as there are thousands of these lights throughout the state. I've even witnessed 2 pairs in 2 separate lights next to each other. I wrote up a little article in a previous update if anyone is interested.

Hey Wyatt,

I was thinking today( I know that's a dangerous proposition). Could the type of lights have any significance in attracting the PMs? Or do you think it is simply the cavity? I know I may be grabbing at straws but what if it was the light. It could be used as an attractant especially for the folks who don't have any Martins yet.

I guess I'm just worried about our friends who don't have any yet. Sometimes we have to think outside the box and look at the obvious. Any opinions or observations? :P

Peace to all and many Martins,

Hi Harley,

It is certainly possible that it could be the light, but I don't think so. My personal opinion is that they just happen to look like gourds, have a nesting area inside, and are in an area with a clear fly-way (along a street with a vacant lot on one side and open prison grounds on the other side.) And most importantly they have been successful there before.
But anything is possible. The lights certainly don't seem to bother them so it can't hurt for someone who's tried everything else to give some security lights a try.

Thanks for the idea!

OK James Strickland - Go get some of those lights! It blows my mind how a site like James' can be martinless while martins are squatting in street lights!

Hey Kelly,
I'm with you. James place is beautiful. Martins should reside there. I thought maybe the kind of lights in question might have some special attribute that the Martins like. Maybe vibration, heat, I don't know something. There's got to be something we are overlooking. It's probably just a cavity BUT?

Hey Harley: I was also thinking about the jail bird jokes but these jail birds really have a bright future!

Oh, by the way Harley, I think God must have quite a sense of humor by some of the scenarios I see in life. Life truely is more funny than fiction.

Hey Les,

You are so right. If we have anything to say about it the PM will have a bright future. God must have a sense of humor. Some things that happen in life are almost too funny or strange to be true.

Peace amd many Martins, 8) n
