Re: Hosp Count

I’ve only caught two females that I’ve kept alive in my DRST for about two weeks. Haven’t been able to trap anymore. There are a couple males hanging around that I’d like to trap. I tried feathers as bait for a few days but that hasn’t worked. Going back to millet and will try to find a nest that I...

Re: Arrival this week!

Its like the tide with those starlings, when they find a home they are gone, then others start looking again. Iv gotten a few with the pellet gun, just a few. Nothing in the traps yet. I whacked close to 100 off season. They love peanut flavored suet, so during the winter id put a block out and get ...

Re: Baby sparrow call

Very welcome! It doesn't last long, but oh boy does it work. First time I tried it, a squirrel ran over, then the male. It works great for those hard to get sparrows, called one over from my neighbors. Try it at a big box store or a restraunt, see what happens. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=msZw3oMA...

Anyone ever try this? Males cannot resist it, doesn't last more than a minute or so though.

Re: Opening Cavities

Hey Thomas! Soon the younger ASY age class will arrive, then the subbie hordes... think you probably don't need all open yet. Perhaps the ones you can cover with a pellet gun? Seems the oldest like the upper most, so close up what your comfortable with on the back side, lower levels? If you don't ha...

Re: Arrival this week!

They sound happy. So too their human. Hate to say it but starlings can get into crescent openings, had one starling get in a crescent last year, and Rob just had one get into his crescent. There are smaller starlings. Trap them, can set up a bird house with a big 2 inch hole within sight of the mart...

Wonderful upgrade! 48 feet of perch space for some very pampered martins! Good way to attach too.
I attached some to troyer gourds, very popular and they love em. Looks like all the touches are in place and alls ready to go.

Hope your season is outstanding,

Re: Arrival this week!

Fantastic news! Isn't it wonderful, all the drama of a martin colony. Cut from a set of Hallmark or Lifetime drama.

Sounds busy already, dont waste any time do they?

Hope your season is fantastic,
Tom

Re: Parking lot lights near housing?

Hope it pans out, sounds like a good idea! The lights won't bother them. Iv 18 gourds smack in the middle of my front yard. Garage outdoor lights come on at dusk. Never been a problem. Also there is a roost that forms every year, they are in a bunch of oaks in a strip mall and parking lot, last year...

Rob, sometimes the best solutions are the simplest...martins don't need bells and whistles. I like it! Lots cannot afford commercial, like the alternative sir!

Gary,
It wasn't near as bad as 2021 for Texas anyway...but bad enough. Good notes.
I suspect some just try to escape and end up hidden.

Man, agree 100%. Good lord. Now when flipping there are misses. When I threw them on the roof, not one escaped. In fact they would follow one all the way down, and when it fell they would follow it, 2 feet from me. Thought they were going to land on the ground. Here's a picture of the preserve marti...
