Feeding martins

Well, even without "my" martins being banded I know they have been here before... It is in the low 30's today and the pair that showed up on the 20th have not been active at all, in fact I thought that maybe they had left until I started talking to myself out on the sidewalk. Out th...

Martins in West Central Illinois

Looked out tonight, had that feeling, sure enough! ASY male and female! It was right at 7:00p.m. Still light enough to make out that head/beak shape. So when I walked out to welcome them back (tradition) they came out on the porches and did their little gurgle-chirp back to us. So Sweet! I'll dream ...

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions, luck would have it, a good neighbor had a 15' tall step ladder. It was pretty windy, and ground was a little soggy, but what ever was the problem, I can't figure it out. As soon as my husband raised up on it I could feel the difference in the rope and it...

No, sorry Joe I don't, I have the equipment just haven't figured out how to use it all. It is the basic Trio Mini Castle, we have had it for probably 10 years or so I'm not surprised that something has broke up top. Calling the neighbors looking for a 15' step ladder, hope someone has one.

HELP! mini castle stuck up in the air

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this house down without doing MAJOR damage. I am pretty sure the cable broke and it is resting on the cross bolt. it is hard enough remove it from the ground pole (no, not set into a socket) when the house is lowered let alone with it being all the way ...

Ren, yes it's nothing fancy. It is a frame with screen bottom. We live in a rural area so we have a mail box on a post. I have attached the tray at the top of the mail box post that is just maybe three feet from one of our houses. I also put egg shells in there for them during nesting time. It is on...

Five dead

Gary & I did our first check yesterday(15th), since the bitter cold hit around the 4th of April we didn't drop the houses to disturb them. I had put a 60 watt bulb in one compartment of the mini castle and had seen them huddled around that room most of the time. I fed them close to 30,000 meal w...

Glen, I know you said that you tried flinging food for them, but just from our experience here in Payson,IL. it took us five dozen crickets before one of our females finally flew out and caught one, once she did the feeding frenzy was on. Luckily they had all or mostly landed in our driveway so we s...

Mike, Excellent web site! We live right across the road from the local high school. I too have been thinking that surely they would be interested in doing something simular. Our houses and gourd racks are in our front yard so everything we do is in plain view for all to see, (you should have seen th...
