Here's an illustration of how the top is attached and how the pulley is configured on a 3 1/2 " x 3 1/2" wooden pole.

Re: Double Taverner Martin House Project

:) Hello Everyone, Both the Single Taverner and Double Taverner have been constructed a winch system to move the house up and down the pole. The tilt pole was used to make it easier to mount the house in this horizontal position. All the entrances were equipped with SRE plates. (WDC) In retrospect, ...

Re: Spring Losses !!

Hi Bill, Spring was a very difficult time for the martins here at my colony in Essex, Ontario. I was very fortunate to not lose any Martins or Tree Swallows but others reported losing between 5 and 50 Martins and several Tree Swallows. Stewards who fed their martins complained that some martins in t...

Re: Essex ASY's and Juveniles Still Returning 8/24/2019

Hi All, Thanks for your responses. You have also observed this kind of late behaviour so it seems that I am not alone with these late martins. Hapsboy, where is your site in La Salle? Although it seems that these martins started egg laying late or even re-nested , it's time to lower the housing and g...

The Point Pelee Roost comprises a number of different swallow species as well as grackles, red wings and a variety of waterfowl. The number of swallows is estimated around 20,000 or more but it is difficult to get an accurate count. The roost has been increasing over the last two weeks. Best viewing...

Predator guard

Hi Wyatt,
I'm glad you like the individual compartments. They make nest checks much better. The predator guard is attached to the house with screws so there is nothing at the base of the pole.

New T 14

One of our OPMA members added a new T 14 to his colony complete with individual doors, a winch extension, and predator guard. The martins really enjoyed the new addition. The individual doors made for easy nest checks without spooking the rest of the colony inhabitants.

Tree Swallows Arrive In Essex,Ontario.....not n April's Fool

Wow that is interesting to hear that they are in Port Rowan. Some of our OPMA members have a great colony across from the Bird Studies building. I'm wondering whether his martins will be back this week or that this is one from his colony. Did you see any gourd racks up across the way? I'm glad to he...

Two and half years has gone quickly but there is nothing like seeing that first tree swallow of the season. Go...

Gravenhurst Martins

Hi Brenda,

Have a look at this 2011 article about the purple martin decline in the Gravenhurst area and perhaps a reason for the lack of martin landlords in that area.

Double Taverner

Spuds,
Great job on modifying and adding your own modification to the DT Martin house. The colours are beautiful and you managed to do the scroll work under the house very well. Wishing you much success in attracting the Texas martins to your location!
