Re: Free Houses

Thank you for your post, John. I don't know of any public sites in my area, but I've send emails to the Travis Audubon Society (in Austin) and a local wildlife rescue rehab. If they're not interested in the houses, I'll post on our local neighborhood facebook/nextdoor sites. I've cleaned the houses ...

Free Houses

Hello All, My husband and I are relocating, and we have two houses available that we would like to give away. One is a Trendsetter 12, and the other is a Nature House MSS-12 with an addition,. Both houses have winches. We also have extra floors, doors, etc. I am currently in the process of cleaning ...

Rehabbers in San Antonio or Austin area?

Hi - Are there any rehabbers in the San Antonio or Austin area? I have an injured martin and need some help. I found a martin fledgling on my back porch (about 200 ft from my martin houses). It can't fly now - maybe it flew into my window - I don't know - there's not any blood on the bird or any oth...

Thank you for your response. The mate was also an SY male. I made a note weeks ago that this pair would sit on the balcony of another compartment (no nest in that compartment). I've seen an SY male & female sitting on that balcony. I assume it's the same female, but I don't know if it's the same...

Missing eggs and young

On my last nest check, I found a dead SY male in a nest (Trendsetter 12 unit). 2 weeks ago the same nest had been wrecked (nesting material dislodged and eggs scattered). I put the nest together as best I could, and on my next nest check found that more eggs had been laid. This time, though, along w...

Adding Vent Holes to Trendsetter

We have 2 houses - a Nature House MSS-12 (converted to larger 6 compartment) and a Trendsetter 12 compartment. All the babies that jumped were in the Trendsetter. The internal vents are wide open. I've just drilled two vent holes in the removable doors on the Trendsetter, and I'm thinking about dril...

Laverne, Thank you so much for the info about the length of the wings! I did try and put the chick on the balcony of the house I thought it came from. It gaped at a female, and she attacked it. The chick went scrambling into the compartment and the female went after it in the compartment. Clearly, I...

[quote="KathyF"]Try putting it back on the house or a platform. The parents will NOT feed it on the ground. If it still can't fly, get it to a rehabber! It's great that it's taking food from you!

How long should I try this before taking it to a rehabber? Should I try it in the rain?

I know at times nature can be cruel, and I'm conflicted as to whether or not I should intervene, but when I saw the chick try to climb a tree, I couldn't take it any more. This season has been awfully stressful.

Recently fledged martin can't fly now

4 nests (5 chicks each) fledged around 6/6. In the evening some (or all) fledglings and parents come back to their house. Yesterday morning I found a fledgling on the ground, unable to fly. I examined it, and it appeared to be healthy (no wounds) and well-fed. The parents were flying over it, squawk...
