Re: Pecked eggs…sparrow or SY??

First Arrival Blenheim Ontario

We were working in the yard and heard that familiar sound. Went running out to put up the house (it was down for cleaning) and spotted a female (ASY, pretty sure). Only had a few looks and did not see her again after the house was up. Kind of curious, did not see a male. Also, the tree swallows have...

Re: Natural Gourd Seed

I don't have seed to sell but may be able to help a little otherwise. I have bought the "birdhouse" gourd seeds in the past and they worked. What I have noticed is that once some of the blooms have set, say 4 or 6, I have pruned off subsequent blooms so that the first 4 or 6 will grow larg...

Any chance that these birds will nest at this point?

I have six martins that have been hanging around for the last month. They have put some nest material in a few gourds and in a few compartments in an aluminum house. I have a selection of gourds and houses up and have been trying to attract martins for many years. There is a colony of eight nesting ...

Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

T-Bird, those nice PCP are sweet but I hardly use mine because I am kind of hard on them. We are on a farm and the air rifle I am carrying always ends up laying on the ground or up against a tree or something. So the expensive ones stay in the safe. 4th Gen, the Beeman is a 1040. My father in law ga...

Re: Pellet guns...What do you own or recommend?

It depends on what you are shooting. We have a selection of air rifles, gassers, levers (like the old Daiseys), and crack barrels, some good ones and some cheapy's. From a land lord's point of view, even though it is a cheapy, I like our Beeman crack barrel with a 0.22 barrel on it the best for shoo...

Off Topic: Monarch Butterflies

Just to keep it from being 100% off topic, we once again had only martin visitors, no nests. We had martins a decade or so ago and then had a bad spring where a number of them froze to death and nothing since. We have been trying harder each year but each year our trees keep getting bigger and we th...

Re: tree swallows

7/8" x 2 1/4", more or less rectangular? Here, I get very few blue birds. I get lots of tree swallows. And, of course, the martins are doing ok. The sparrows are hardest on the TS's here. For every 4 successful nests of TS's I find 1 with a murdered female. If those dimensions keep the hos...

We get our seeds from OSC:

Usually grow fine, but this year they were all small. We were really dry and I didn't keep them watered.

Build a V Trap?

The HOSP's are arriving faster than I can shoot them and are killing all my other birds, especially tree swallows, in the nest boxes. I have a repeater that catches the odd sparrow. In the experience of those of you who have built Troyer style V top traps, is it worth the effort? Will the big trap c...

As mentioned, further north:

* longer summer days
* more bugs

but:

*shorter summer,

it is a balancing act for migrating bird species.

The summer bugs in northern Ontario are awful!.., unless you like to eat them.

Same here, tree swallows are usually a week (+/- a few days) ahead of martins and barnies (we love our barnies too).

First robins and killdeers were last week, first turkey vultures today, so we expect tree swallows next week and martins the following.

Martins Back, Where are Barn and Cliff Swallows, SW Ontario

Our martins and tree swallows are back but I haven't seen a single barn or cliff swallow. Starting to get worried.

Anybody anywhere seen them?

Thanks,
JP.
