ASY male in a cage for a week now in the house.

I have had my ASY male in the house for a week today. I feed him crickets and have put super worms in his dish too. He does not like the super worms and throws them out. He eats crickets when I put them in but today he is puffed up and seems to be shivering as if he is cold. I have a heating pad und...

Rehab in Texas

 We took 3 purple martin babies to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center today in Hutchins Texas. Penny who works there informed us that it was a $50 charge per bird to leave them there. She also told us that they had to be fed every 15 minutes and they were underweight and it would be a wee...

 Penny, you and the Texas Rehabbers are a great gift to us in the Dallas Texas area. I called you yesterday and you helped me by giving us the name of the vet clinic by White Rock. What a great bunch of people that work there. I know you have your hands full with all the babies that you are fe...

The heat in Texas is at its peak now and we are having July weather in June. I put sun shields over my gourd rack and also on my trio house. I use corrugated plastic and cut in strips and lay these on the top rack of my gourds. I have a Lone Star Gourd rack, leaving about 6 inches between the strips...

Thanks, and I did think that maybe the SY's might be the culprits but that is a lot of birds and we were not finding them on the ground and we walk under the rack and house every day to check for babies on the ground. I did find one on the ground and it was alive and we put it back in the nest and t...

:-( I also have a mystery at my colony. We are missing 12 babies and about 4 eggs. We could not figure out because in two of the nests there was one or two babies left but eggs were gone. We have netting wrapped around as a guard and have not seen anything caught in it so we know it is not a snake. ...

Rain, rain, rain and cold

I fed my martins about 1700 crickets yesterday in the cold rain and they were so hungry. I wish we could send some of this rain to you people who are in a drought. I have 32 pair so far this year and discovered 4 new babies yesterday so I am hoping the parents fed them some of the crickets that I pu...

Good luck, you might want to freeze the crickets as they will jump from the porches. I froze mine and thawed them out. I just put the second batch of crickets out. They had eaten a lot of the first 200 we put out this morning. It was fairly warm inside with the handwarmers but we are headed out to g...

We live in Carrollton and we fed our martins crickets this morning and put handwarmers inside the gourds. They need warmth and food to survive. I know they were hungry because when we raised the gourds they came back and started to eat the crickets from the porches and tunnels.
Good luck.

I went ahead and moved my eggs yesterday. The female still wants to go back to the nest where I removed the eggs but she and male did spend the night again in the nest where I moved the three eggs. I am hoping they will hatch but they are overdue already. Will wait and see when I do my next nest che...

I have a pair that seems to have three eggs in two different gourds too. I watched her tonight and she sat in one gourd for awhile and then went to the other gourd. The male did not go in one of the gourds and she and the male both went into one gourd to spend the night. Both gourds have three eggs ...
