Re: Of perches and porches...
Agree with others. Don’t give up! You will Slowly and gradually decrease their numbers. It may take a while. But it will happen. I hardly see any hosps anymore after years of shooting them. Continue to trap and as Tom said, make a blind of some type.. anyplace to hide where they can’t see you and pl...

Re: Bluebirds are fighting martins
Hi Ms Linda. First, that’s great that your bluebirds have moved to the boxes. That was a good decision to do that. They prefer being lower to the ground and the smaller box cavities, than in Martin houses. They were probably protecting their boxes from the martins, thinking the martins might move in...

Re: High wind
Agree, martins don’t mind if you lower.. I usually go to about 10 to 9 feet in high winds.. it does depend on your pole strength, top weight, and how you have it cemented into the ground..

Re: Bluebirds are fighting martins
Good luck Linda! I think it will work out..My bluebirds and martins get along with no issues, as others have said.. ..once your BBs move to the boxes, you shouldn’t have any problems..

Had my first SY show up today, too… I’m glad i still have a few compartments left.. saw a sharp shinned attack this morning.. the Martin did a quick side step then escaped.. smallest hawk I’ve ever seen.. had to have been a young sharp shinned… his attack approach looked a litt...

Re: Pole feed trays
Hi Unk. I’ve only used freeze dried mealworms. Without knowing what kind you have I couldn’t answer the best way to keep them. Freeze dried are dead, that come in a resealable bag. If yours were shipped alive the best way would be to freeze them, and thaw in warm water when ready to use.

Hi Unk. I’ve never used live mealworms. Hopefully someone who uses them can answer your question.

Re: Pole feed trays
Hi Unk. I’ve never tried scrambled eggs but people have used them for short term. I wouldn’t try starting them on eggs.
As far as mealworms, I use the freeze dried ones in the bag. And frozen / thawed live crickets.
Good luck

Re: No Porches?
It may be difficult for martins to enter a crescent entrance without a porch.. it would be best to add porches.. pmca sells them I believe.. s and k manufacturing sells porches for a very good price..
Good luck.

6 hosps, 3 starlings so far. Shot from my blind. Haven’t seen any at all in several days.

Re: Some are platter feeding
Unk, if you got the 4 pan set up, it might be a good idea to leave at least one or 2 pans undrilled in case of drought situation, where you would want the crickets to remain in some water, to keep from drying out..

Re: Some are platter feeding
Unk ..
I think I used a 7/32 bit, but anything between 13/64 and 1/4 would do. Don’t want the hole too big, where crickets will fall through.
