Re: Pine straw and dead martins

I've lost a few to cat scratch fever... Didn't kill the bird when it leaped into the air and clawed it...cat scratching I've learned is fatal even when they seem to have gotten away...Been my unfortunate experience.

Re: Tree Swallows

Jones, How close are your bluebird/tree swallow houses from each other? If you have both swallows and bluebirds nesting on your property, you could "pair" bluebird houses/tree swallow gourds within 10' of each other, with the openings being orientated in opposite directions (180 degrees)....

Re: Tree Swallows

For comparative analysis I have 66 gourds 4 racks and as many TS I've ever seen this year, so many in fact the BB/TS battles are being slanted heavily in the favor of TS winning most of these fights...I put up 6 TS gourds on single poles and 4 BB housing in wood. The TS has claimed 8 and BB's are do...

Re: New Hatchlings July 13?

down to last pair of SY's with 3 young at 20 days old. Year winding down and tbh will be glad it's over so I can focus on fall tree and shrub plantings for pollinators in the future. Hawk and Snakes were issues this year but still managed to get out 150+ fledges...hope to get the averages up next ye...

Re: New Hatchlings July 13?

Good catch on that snake! Man that many jumpers? Good gosh, never a dull moment around a martin colony! Glad your catching them as fast as they go. Here we are, home stretch; fledges crowding the front, adults doing their utmost to get them ready. Sometimes its with relief they go! Wish you a quiet...

Re: Have purple martins left this area

Sorry- I’m in northern Virginia I'm in southside VA and had 50+ pair this season and still have 39 or fewer fledglings to go in I think 9 or 10 gourds. So about 40+ gourds of young have fledged (don't have the actual number yet as I haven't entered everything in and added up (150 I'm guessing) Typi...

New Hatchlings July 13?

I've seen this topic occasionally and Brent in LA is experiencing it now in the deep south, I've just joined this concerning club of late hatchlings. At this colony we've had approximately 75% breeding/raising/leaving completed. Yesterday doing spot checks on the 15 gourds with youngsters left, I de...

Re: Gourd Rack recommendations requested

I’m planning to add a gourd rack for next year and I’m debating between the Troyer Super System 24 and Gemini 24. I’m looking for good wind resistance specifically. The Gemini seems more compact so maybe catches less wind but the Super System spaces the gourds further apart on each arm which may he...

Re: the state of Central Texas flocks on radar

Really a neat time for the species as they are roosting down in the deep south, 60-70% fledged in the mid-areas of NC/VA and haven't even begin to fledge in PA/NY north... Activity abounds everywhere around July 4th every year...

Brent,
Don't worry about the .0001% that may not make it. Spend more time talking to your rep about what you can do about slowing down climate change. Let's face it; its gonna get hotter. Mike, Palm City

Martin Watch frustration

There has to be a better program/software for this... Had to create a new colony and all 60 entries due to the fact the old colony created a double gourd entry and there is no way to delete it. I've got 10 checks to enter for 60 gourds and I'm on #4  (Thats gourd 4 of 60)... I was informed las...

Re: When is it too hot?

Hi all. I have a late nest of 3 young that are now 8 days old. Last nest check they look great and are growing. Parents are actively involved. The temperature is predicted to be 95 with heat index of 105. I have Trendsetter houses that are vented. What do you think? Too hot or worrying for nothing?...
